Great read
Revisado: 01-23-22
Fanny with all her spirit and determination is a loveable heroine. As you follow her through her adventures you are quickly taken by her charm. The settings of Budapest and Vienna before the first world war are lovely and take you back to an elegant European era. The descriptions of the war torn countries , the suffering as well the devastation of Franz Joseph's empire are well researched and bring an authentic feel to the novel.

A memorizing story
Revisado: 01-23-21
The novel is based on a true crime that was committed in St. Louis Missouri and the effect it had on the victims' family. It is the heartbreaking story of two young women who are brutally raped and murdered by four men. it is also about police incompetencand their disregard for the victims in their zeal to solve a crime as well as the misinformation of the media. Really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Fillet delivers again
Revisado: 10-25-20
Always am amazed that Fillet can write such amazing fiction in a defined time period of British history. The struggle between good and evil is well depicted in this novel, the cruelty towards women and the hardships that they endured is also well portrayed. Life was difficult for the nobility and peasants alike and the author keeps the reader spellbound as always, yet love conquers all without being maudlin. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book full of twists and turns that will keep the reader enthralled.

Lovely story
Revisado: 10-14-20
Was very skeptical when I started this book but enjoyed it immensely. Really liked the way the author portrayed the characters and particularly the way she used the anology of the smell of perfumes to the character of the people that she was involved with. I adore wearing perfume especially the French one's and found it fascinating to find such a discovery of how they are made..it is also the story of Lee miller and Paris during the twenties. it was a sad and a beautiful tale of losses and renewal. if you decide to read it hope that you enjoy it as much as I did. Nora, Nickey, Dalia will stay with me for a long time. The beauty of a lovely story well told.

Rather boring
Revisado: 09-09-20
Beautiful Bernice Perez's love relationship is a rather boring as is her foray with the CIA. The only interesting aspect of this book are the factual events of the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, some of the political ramifications of Kennedy's tenure as President of the US and his
assassination.

Interesting story
Revisado: 03-10-20
Esme was an interesting character raised by an ambitious mother and a father who was first a bookie, a gambler, thug and finally.a robber. She lost her beautiful mother at a young age, and eventually moved to Las Vegas with her father. The city was starting to boom with casinos built and owned by mobsters. Esme becomes a cigarette girl at 15, a dancer in the casino club and finally the mistress of a mobster Nick Stein. She learns about the violence and killings that her mentor, lover is capable of and tries to leave him. it is a sad story of a woman defined by the hopeless dreams of her parents in an era of glittering actors and actresses as well as mobsters who make appearances throughout the novel in both the city of Los Angeles and Las Vegas. From a historical perspective it was interesting to glimpse the who's who of Hollywood in the 30's and 40's as well as the mob who established Las Vegas as a gambling mega but it dragged in some parts.

Revisado: 02-20-20
Wonderful story about two sisters, Mickey and Casey growing up in Philadelphia. It dwells on the terrible consequences that addiction has on families. It is sad yet hopeful that with love and the positive reinforcement of family that the effects of drug addiction can be overcome. So well written, leaving you wishing these two very courageous women a brighter and happier future.

Enjoyed this book tremendously
Revisado: 11-05-19
There are now so many books out at the moment recounting stories of World War II and though I have read many of them, just loved this book by Lynn Olsen. Did not realize how large the resistance movement was in France and what an impact they had on getting pertinent information to the Allies' of German movements in occupied France. The Alliance, the largest of the resistant organizations led by Madame Fourcade was one of the most important asset of information to the British against the Nazis. What was so fascinating was that it was led by a woman who was courageous, determined and totally committed to freeing her country from the evil terror of the occupation of France by the Germans. While I found many individual names hard to follow , it did not deter from this memorizing tale. Hope other readers get to know a woman guided by her commitment and love of her country spent years living in fear as well as losing many of the people she loved, and yet provided so much to the war effort.
