Narration
Revisado: 09-03-24
The material appears factual. Some of the discussion can get too tedious and detailed.
I did not care for the narration. The tone feels like he's talking to children. The worst is pronunciation. Shouldn't the narrator make some effort to pronounce Aztec and Spanish names and places consistent with conventional usage? A dialect coach or a trip to Mexico would help.

Of course, this is an authoritative review of Maya archeology. I just want to add my appreciation of Mr. Tiedemann's genuine effort to correctly pronounce the Spanish and Maya words. Thank you.

Historia
This memoir is an autobiographical account of the events as witnessed by Bernal Diaz - a Conquistador on that journey - a man from Spain who desperately hoped to carve out a life of riches for himself in the new world and instead found himself on an epic journey of conquest, whilst desperately fighting to stay alive, in previously unknown and unimagined lands. This is a true tale written in his own hand and translated into English. It is a gripping account of the events from the soldiers' viewpoint as each day becomes a battle for survival against incredible odds.

Ruined by the narrator
Revisado: 09-10-23
You have to separate the incredible story from the narration.
Bernal Diaz's diary of the daily events and descriptions of the men and their thoughts is unparalled. His account is rich in fascinating detail. The Spaniards' avarice and hypocrisy can be seen between the lines though he tries to rationalize and wash over.
Unfortunately, the narration is disquieting, to say the least. The heavy Australian accent never gives way, even for a moment. It's not a fault for the anglo words, but this is a book by a Spaniard about the adventures of Spaniards in Mexico. There are Spanish names and words throughout every page. If you have never heard the Spanish language in your life, I suppose it would be fine. But to my ear, I felt I was being hit with a stick every time he spoke a Spanish word or name. Cringe, cringe, cringe, one hundred times per hour.
Exhasting.
