Historia
In this sweeping history, Ireland's best-known historian, Tim Pat Coogan, tackles the dark history of the Irish Famine and argues that it constituted one of the first acts of genocide. In what the Boston Globe calls "his greatest achievement", Coogan shows how the British government hid behind the smoke screen of laissez faire economics, the invocation of divine providence, and a carefully orchestrated publicity campaign, allowing more than a million people to die agonizing deaths and driving a further million into emigration.

Genocide, clearly genocide

The author relates the known facts of the British government’s plan to remove as many of the Irish people from Ireland either by death by starvation or packed into coffin ships.

A moving coming-of-age story set in the 1900s, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn follows the lives of 11-year-old Francie Nolan, her younger brother Neely, and their parents, Irish immigrants who have settled in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Johnny Nolan is as loving and fanciful as they come, but he is also often drunk and out of work, unable to find his place in the land of opportunity.

I’d forgotten
Revisado: 06-30-22
I first read A Tree grows in Brooklyn sometime around 1968. Someone had left a copy on a bunk as they were leaving the barracks. I only knew the title as a kind of punchline for a gag in a Saturday morning cartoon.
I started reading at breakfast and finished right after 8PM. I was swept away by the story, the characters and even the music. I don’t remember if I noticed the anti-Semitic jibes during that first reading. Part of brutish New York, I guess.

Historia
"If Shakespeare were alive today, he'd sound like an American." "English accents are the sexiest." "Americans have ruined the English language." "Technology means everyone will have to speak the same English." Such claims about the English language are often repeated but rarely examined. Professor Lynne Murphy is on the linguistic front line. In The Prodigal Tongue she explores the fiction and reality of the special relationship between British and American English.

Fun and Interesting
Revisado: 02-12-19
Lynn Murphy’s at times serious, at times humorous look at the language I thought I knew kept me wanting to learn more.
This, thankfully, is not an academic treatise, but a wry full body scan of our sames and differences.

Historia
In this Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, historian Barbara Tuchman brings to life the people and events that led up to World War I. This was the last gasp of the Gilded Age, of Kings and Kaisers and Czars, of pointed or plumed hats, colored uniforms, and all the pomp and romance that went along with war. How quickly it all changed...and how horrible it became.

Masterful History Great Presentation
Revisado: 12-01-18
This book remains as one of the essential histories one must have read in order to understand this present world.
The reading by Nadia May is so well done, just enough accents, just enough deliberate slowly through some of Tuchman more complicated moments, I have praise and will now for any other work of hers.

Like flipping a switch
Revisado: 04-12-18
Got in bed on a Sunday morning with a hangover, listened from start to finish, decided that day would be my last day of drinking.
Haven’t had one now in 45 days, the longest I’ve gone without alcohol in years.
But, get this, NO twinges, no temptations, no bargaining, just no desire to drink motor oil in moderation.
Listen to the book, that will make sense.
Good luck to you.

Historia
In a Tokyo suburb, a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife’s missing cat—and then for his wife as well—in a netherworld beneath the city’s placid surface. As these searches intersect, he encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists. Gripping, prophetic, and suffused with comedy and menace, this is one of Haruki Murakami’s most acclaimed and beloved novels.

Incredible Narration
Revisado: 04-06-18
I liked this book very much, it had a wonderful flow from scene to scene and interesting, complete characters , but what made listening to the story most enjoyable was Degas’ ability to create real separate voices for each character.
I’ve listened to many, many books now, but this narration was the best of all of them. J

Historia
After being denied admission to a Masonic lodge in Batavia, William Morgan secured a sizable advance from a local newspaper publisher for this work. That publisher, David Cade Miller, released this book after Morgan's death, presumably at the hands of the Masons. Because of the notoriety of the previous events, The Mysteries of Free Masonry Containing All the Degrees of the Order Conferred in a Master's Lodge became an instant best seller and an American classic.

Most Boring Book Ever Written or Read Aloud
Revisado: 06-03-12
What disappointed you about The Mysteries of Free Masonry Containing All the Degrees of the Order Conferred in a Master's Lodge?
There must be some other way to present "The Mysteries" besides the verbatim reading out of every knock and question/answer ritual.
Would you ever listen to anything by William Morgan again?
Nope
Would you listen to another book narrated by Ken Maxon?
Yep. He did a good job with terrible material.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
meh
