Purple prose in the extreme.

I listened to this set of books on Kindle Unlimited. While the bones of the story were interesting, the writing was full of hyperbole and the narration was fairly flat.
The exaggeratedly verbose descriptions of most things was very distracting. The narration was more recitation than performance.

I have loved Anne Rice's writing from the time my best friend placed The Witching Hour in my hands 20 years ago. Taltos, the culmination of the Mayfair Witches saga is a fantastic, compelling, suspenseful tale. I don't know how many times I've read it since it came out in hardcover in 1994. This is the 1st of many listenings, I'm sure. I've heard the entire series as read by Kate Reading and I think she's the perfect person for the job! I'm thrilled to have her 'read me a story.'

A MUST READ for every one!

I was born in the 60's. I'm Caucasian. And Southern. My High School was the last in Texas to be integrated. I didn't even realize til it was integrated how lily-white it was before. I was fortunate enough to live overseas as a child and didn't fall prey to the racism. But there was a lot of it in my family. I was ashamed to discover how much. My great grandparents, who raised me til age 8 were appalled that I made friends with non-whites in high school. My father said horrible things when my sister was dating a young non-white man. I was mortified by his behavior.
The Help is an intimate compelling story. It resonated with me and the past on many levels.
I think it would benefit everyone to read it and listen to the Audible version. It's not all sunshine & roses but gritty & moving. I absolutely love it!
