Historia
In this intimate and open account—nothing like any rock-and-roll memoir you’ve ever read—Alex Van Halen shares his personal story of family, friendship, music and brotherly love in a remarkable tribute to his beloved brother and band mate. In his rough yet sweet voice, Alex recounts the brothers’ childhood, first in the Netherlands and then in working class Pasadena, California, with an itinerant musician father and a very proper Indonesian-born mother.

Fun Read But Nothing New for Hard Core Fans
Revisado: 10-23-24
If you’re looking for a Ted Templeman or Noel Monk style inside the camp book, this isn’t it. The magic here is hearing the most media shy of the four tell his story. I didn’t know boats had a smell! I wanted more about the inner workings of the band but this is a must read for any Van Halen fan. His dedication to his craft and his deep love for his brother shine here. Well done, Alex. Thanks for giving me one more experience of waiting in line for a new Van Halen release. That alone took me back!

Disappointed it didn’t fold out to a coffee table!
Revisado: 06-10-24
I may never buy another audiobook that’s not read by the author. What a great listen! His Seinfeld stories were great. His childhood is interesting. His unabashed retelling of the meltdown on the stand up stage was fantastic. If you’re a Seinfeld fan; I can’t recommend enough. If you’re not; I can’t recommend this enough. Side note: His Jay Leno voice is dead-on.

If you’re looking for Brady knowledge this isn’t it.
Revisado: 06-06-24
I came for some insights on the ubiquitous after school TV show, The Brady Bunch. But there was truly very little of that in this book. It was tough to sit through. It veered into chatty personal things that she would talk to her friends about over lunch. it was however, neat to hear about her personal redemption and her ultimate salvation. Just know what you’re going to listen to when buying this book.

Stephen Pearcy was a scrawny, horny, thrill-seeking teenager with an electric guitar who had graduated from backyard parties in San Diego to half-empty dives in Los Angeles before he and his band broke through at Whiskey a Go Go. Cranking out metal just as metal got hot, Ratt was the perfect band at the perfect time, and their hit single "Round and Round" became a top-selling anthem.

Good but not complete
Revisado: 05-23-24
Excellent retelling of the heady days of the Sunset Strip. I learned about a band I never really liked all that much but SP did a great job of telling the story. I was disappointed that he didn’t dive deeper into Crosby’s downfall and eventual death. It’s a shame.it would have really rounded out the story.

Great stories

Pretty awfully narrated. Read too fast and many very notable player’s names mispronounced. So rushed, pod have been much better. It’s a shame. Good stories in there.

Outstanding cure for insomnia

I can blame Megan Kelly. She had the author (her husband) on her XM show to pitch the book. I’m a student of history and I love untold stories about famous people, events and inventions that I may not know. This had all the elements to be great. Kelly asked great questions and her husband came across as a bright and entertaining. I totally get how a dork like that landed a looker like Kelly. The dude can sell! He sold me this boring book. I’m on chapter 21 and I am going through an exhaustive list of compression ratios and engine weight and the pros of this machinery over steam power and maybe some other stuff? I’m not even sure anymore. This audiobook has been used the last three nights to put me in a deep sleep at night. The narrator is excellent. He says those German words real German sounding.
I really, really wanted to like this book. Typically on a disappointment I can at least come away with some trivia or insights or something redeeming. I have a few chapters left so maybe he’ll pull it out at the end. But the history of big oil, Rockefeller and a peek into daily life at the time was not enough to hold any real interest.

Historia
After years of gigging everywhere from suburban backyards to dive bars, Van Halen - led by frontman extraordinaire David Lee Roth and guitar virtuoso Edward Van Halen - had the songs, the swagger, and the talent to turn the rock world on its ear. The quartet's classic 1978 debut, Van Halen, sold more than a million copies within months of release and rocketed the band to the stratosphere of rock success.

For hard core VH fans
Revisado: 01-18-23
This is a tough listen. Very well researched and delivered. But the author is in a spot if he’s trying to reach new VH converts. I suspect he wasn’t. Only the hard core Van Halen fans can fully appreciate this work. But those same Van Halen fans will learn very little new here.
