Historia
Tom Keely's reputation is in ruins. And that's the upside. Divorced and unemployed, he's lost faith in everything precious to him. Holed up in a grim high-rise, cultivating his newfound isolation, Keely looks down at a society from which he's retired, hurt and angry. He's done fighting the good fight, and well past caring. But even in his seedy flat, ducking the neighbours, he's not safe from entanglement. All it takes is an awkward encounter in the lobby. A woman from his past, and a boy the likes of which he's never met before.

Frustrating
Revisado: 11-14-13
The sentences in this work are great - funny (as satisfying as the afterglow from a good shit), self-depricating (what are the two best things to come out of Freo?) and highly evocative.
The paragraphs are fantastic too - really nail the feeling of being in Perth in an interminable summer. And, although I don't think they will win and tourism awards for WA, the depictions of Freo past its prime and of Perth as a site office for a mining company ring true.
The characters are well drawn - you get the feeling of what it's like to live their lives and how the little victories or setbacks influence things.
But the plot and conclusion are just so frustrating. A quick trip to Charlie Gardiner Hospital instead of home to the couch and half the problems would be solved. The other half may still need Littlefinger to push someone out the Moon Door, but that is a different story. And the ending - perhaps I could chip in a few extra bucks and get another half hour of story.
It's a bit hard to know how to rate this. If you were only to listend to a section of it, it would be great. But I did not really enjoy the story as a whole.

Mixes it up well

Having recently enjoyed listened to the first book, The Suspect, I tried this second book and was pleased to find how well the different point of view worked.
I find the plot device of amnesia a bit of a cheap shot, but it was handled pretty well here. The narrator has an unusual cadence, which really gives personallity to the main character. Will definitely be looking at more in this series.

When Sheldon Cooper Met Sally
Revisado: 05-02-13
This is a romatic comedy, starring an unlikely hero who has some "issues" on the Autism spectrum. Much of the comedy comes from the dead-pan description of emotions and schedules - for example, all characters are introduced with an estimated age and BMI. The overall effect is to give an funny insight into someone with OCD tendencies. All is not lost for Our Hero, who has many good qualities to compensate for his lack of social skills.
My wife has made me sit though plenty of romatic comedies, but this would be one of the better ones.

Pretty average
Revisado: 04-16-13
This is a basic thriller, as described on the box. I thought the characters were just a bit flat and dull. I would give it a 2.5 if I could, because it was pleasant enough to listen to (except for all the Christianity stuff).

Not much to get excited about here
Revisado: 04-16-13
I found this story lacking the element that gives things a bit of spice and makes you just want to listen more. The main characters seem to stumble around from one predicament to another without much reason so ultimately I did not particularly care about their fate.
There are the beginnings of some good antagonists, but just when they get going, the heros move on, pretty much unscathed.
The narrator conveyed a certain naivety for the main character, which may have been his goal, but it put me off a bit.

Worth the Iron Price
Revisado: 01-01-13
Words are wind, and this is a hurricane, but there is much, and more to like about this latest instalment. I thought that book four was a Mummer's farce - I was wroth to find my favourite characters (and the song "bear and the maiden fair") missing. But they pop up here stronger and more ruthless than ever - books four and five overlap in time and should mayhaps be taken as a whole.
The narration is amazing (with the possible exception of Daenerys, the Leprechaun) - the distinct accents for each character makes following along much easier.
Jon Snow knows nothing, and we are no closer to finding out where whores go, but now I am keener than an imp in a brothel for book 6.

Historia
Number-one best-seller John Grisham returns with his most suspenseful thriller yet. Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of the USA only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett just became number five. I did not know Judge Fawcett, but I know who killed him, and why. I am a lawyer, and I am in prison. It's a long story.

Not your usual legal thriller.
Revisado: 11-27-12
This is not actually a 'legal thriller', more like "one man against the system". Our Hero tells the story of he schemed to get out of jail and this plot line climaxes about halfway though the book, so you know that there will be more twists in the tale. Without spoiling things too much, the second half of the book sees the tables turned as Our Hero goes on the offensive to try to get some satisfaction.
I enjoyed the pacing, which made me want to listen just a little bit longer to see where the cunning plan was going. The narrator was good and I can recommend this as something in the genre that is also a little bit different.

Historia
The War of the Five Kings has ripped Westeros apart. The bloodthirsty, treacherous and cunning Lannisters occupy the Iron Throne, with allies as ruthless as themselves. Lord Frey was host at the Red Wedding, so called for the massacre of the guests, their screams unheard above the music of the feast. Euron Crow’s Eye is as black a pirate as ever raised a sail, sworn to deliver the whole of Westeros to the ironborn. No less to be feared are their enemies. The Starks of Winterfell and the Martells of Dorne seek vengeance for their dead.

I could not commit to this book
Revisado: 08-10-12
I listened to the first 2 parts of this - and it seemed ok. If there was some kind of conclusion there, then I would have rated it highly. But life is too short - I would rather try something else, rather than 3 more parts of the same. 2/5 stars for 2/5 parts of the book. Maybe I will change my opinion if I ever get around to finishing it.

Not a great half-book
Revisado: 06-22-12
I loved 3 the first books, but this one is a real step backwards. I took hours to get to the "big name" characters and hardly a disembowelment in sight. There was nothing from Daenerys, Bran or Tyrion. Much of the action took place with the Dawnish characters, however 3 of the charcaters' names started with "Ari" which I think is a bad choice for audio books (perhaps easier to distinguish in print).
That said, I still have high expectstions for the second part as these books have a tendancy to build to a big climax.
