Historia
Horace Manning, scientist, recluse and 'closed book' even to his friends, is found dead in his study at 4a.m., following a dinner in honour of his daughter's engagement. An ivory-handled carving knife rests between his shoulder blades as the houseguests gather round to witness the awful crime. The telephone line has been sabotaged - a calculated murder has been committed. Historia
At a costume party with the dubious theme of 'famous murderers and their victims', the know-it-all amateur criminologist Roger Sheringham is settled in for an evening of beer, small talk and analysing his companions. One guest in particular has caught his attention for her theatrics, and his theory that she might have several enemies among the partygoers proves true when she is found hanging from the 'decorative' gallows on the roof terrace. Noticing a key detail which could implicate a friend in the crime, Sheringham decides to meddle with the scene.

A different and inventive formula for a mystery. A fun golden age novel I’m glad I got this suggestion.

Very exciting plot
Revisado: 02-27-25
I liked the story and the characters a lot. It had a pretty good flow to it. The only thing I didn’t find realistic or enjoyable at all is how the conversations between characters were often too deep and philosophical. Nobody talks in metaphors and about the meaning of life all the time. Also in his 2 books that I’ve read the kids are incredibly precocious in ways that seem highly unlikely

Historia
The police never notice the small detail in the background of a police photograph of an abandoned car. A detail that tells Detective Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte plainly that the mysterious disappearance of Luke Marks near Windee Station is anything but accidental. Why had Luke Marks driven specially out to Windee? Had he been murdered or had he, as the local police believed, wandered away from his car and been overwhelmed in a dust-storm? Bony feels the answers lie somewhere in the sands of Windee.

I have enjoyed these books immensely. It is a real seeming portrayal of life in the outback in the 1920s. The horrible treatment and attitudes about the Aboriginal people is shocking to hear about.even though I wasn’t ignorant of the subject.
The description of the beautiful land and the people who live there is fascinating

Cute story. Narrator good with men’s voices but women’s are horrible and screechy. Very off-putting.
Side note: IMHO Women narrators do better with men’s voices than vice versa

Historia
As a panicked world goes into lockdown, Lucy Barton is uprooted from her life in Manhattan and bundled away to a small town in Maine by her ex-husband and on-again, off-again friend, William. For the next several months, it’s just Lucy, William, and their complex past together in a little house nestled against the moody, swirling sea. Rich with empathy and emotion, Lucy by the Sea vividly captures the fear and struggles that come with isolation, as well as the hope, peace, and possibilities that those long, quiet days can inspire.

Least favorite of ES novels
Revisado: 10-04-24
I have loved ES’s other novels but not this one. I felt Lucy was a whiny and self-centered, not a very interesting character. Her naïveté almost beggars belief as William has to tell her again and again how the world works. I had put off reading this book because of the Covid backdrop and I found that tiring too. Been there done that.
