This is probably the worst YA I've ever read. There are too many villains, the main character is supposed to be smart, but isn't. Most supporting characters are extremely flat. Nora and Patch are completely Toxic together, and Vee is the actual worst friend ever. The author copied other YA series' homework.

PS. That's not how police operate whatsoever.

PSS. If you have a teacher who ignores sexual harassment, get them fired.

I have a criminal justice degree, went to police academy, and I have worked in jails and prisons for years. The author got absolutely everything right. This is an accurate and important piece that I’ve now passive-aggressively mailed to my “broken windows” era professors. I am impressed with this work, and I would encourage you to listen to it.

Honestly, everything useful in this book is contained in the last 15 minutes or so, in the summary. The advice appears to be loosely based in CBT methods, which are evidence based and valuable, but don’t expect anything revolutionary.

If that advice had been even slightly less valuable, this would be a 1-star book. The writing is almost unbearable. The “I’m not like other moms “ attitude is so forced, it’s like staring at a meme on some wine mom’s Facebook story for several hours. I could almost smell the boxed merlot.

I had a hard time discerning whether the author was trying to mock the audience, or if she’s just clinging that hard to potty humor for lack of any other creativity.

I don’t even want a refund. I want several hours of my life back. It was almost painful.

The performance was fairly engaging. The reader deserved a better book.
