Excellent book but...

I really enjoyed this book. It was inexpensive so I thought I'd give it a go and was pleasantly surprised. The book is very different than all of the movies that have come out over the years. It is so well written and plausible that I was deeply drawn into it. The narrator was equally good, with different vioces for each character. The only problem I had was the end of the story. It made me go "What? You've got to be kidding me!" I was annoyed. I realize that this is the first in a series, but come on. It did make me want to immediatly get the next audiobook, however it is not as inexpensive and I've decided to wait. For the price, it was well worth it.

Couldn't turn it off!

The second in my quest for the classics. How could I have never read this book? It actually brought tears to my eyes several times. It is a classic that we all know the opening line "It was the best of times..." and the closing line "It is a far better thing I do.." The story of a family, tightly interwoven with the horrors that led up to and followed the French Revolution. Dickens brings out the blood and death and poverty and hatred, while intermingling it with love and joy and hope. I am off to a roaring start with 2 excellent audiobooks so far.
It is read by Frederick Douglas, and I can't wait to hear other works he has read. He is an excellent narrator and had distinct voices for each character. His French accent was wonderful, and even the women were believable.
If you are on a quest, as I am, to read the classics of great literature, then do not leave this book out. Unabridged is the way to go.

A great listen

This was my first audiobook. I was determined to begin listening to all the classics that I never have time to actually read. I searched for the longest book that I could find that seemed interesting and "Ivanhoe" fit the bill.
I was truly impressed by the story. First I had to wait for an hour to get through the introduction and the forward, which didn't bode well for keeping my interest in audiobooks. After this however, the story began and soon I found myself listening at every spare moment.
It is a tale of knights and chivalry. Appearances by King Richard the lionhearted, Robin Hood, Friar Tuck, and Prince John, along with Ivanhoe and the two women who loved him, kept me entranced. At times the language was haughty and some words were unfamiliar to me. (It was written in the 1800's after all) But it never took away from my enjoyment of the book, and I never felt lost. There are many exciting scenes, and several suprises that are sure to keep any listener coming back for more. I was sorry when it ended.
The narrator was pleasant to listen to, having a deep english accent that complimented the story well, even when forced to sing.
All in all, an excellent book. The character of the fool, Wamba (If that is how it is spelled), was one of my favorites with many a jolly jest. If you have any interest at all in an exciting, medieval adventure/romance, with damsels in distress and knights in shining armor, then you will love this book.
