But not worth listening to for more than 5 minutes.
A good thing it was free.

Pitiful end to the series

The author managed to take a shallow political commentary addressing post-modernists, a feel-good return of a long-thought dead son, a miraculous cure, and other suggestive themes - and, without any depth or complexity, ended a series that had potential.

Any additional comments?

While the author's "Doc" is exquisite, as are her two science fiction novels, this is a very good story of Wyatt Earp, his family and friends. The narrator is also very good, but sometimes she uses the same voice for different characters. But do listen to this novel if you have any interest in Earp. It is far better than any other story about them, and demonstrates an incredible amount of research.

I would not rate this up with Douglas Adams or other humorists in science fiction, but it was ok.

Any additional comments?

The vampire genre is so overdone, so trite, that I initially did not plan to read this series. But I am pleased I did so, since Cronin has kept me happily taking my daily walks without noticing aches and pains. His writing is excellent, and Brick's narration is flawless. Indeed, I felt tears arising as I read the final chapter.

Any additional comments?

I just finished the third in the series and will wax poetically in that review, but I must say that I am continually amazed at Cronin's writing ability, his ability to spin long narratives that keep me riveted, and how I grew to care about the people in the book.

Any additional comments?

I have not been fond of the vampire genre since George R.R. Martin's Fevre Dream and Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's ethical vampire series (which did get old after the 8th or 9th book). But I have to admit that I was very surprised at Cronin's approach to the genre. While there are some familiar tropes, the writing is occasionally lyrical and always excellent. The narrator is also versatile and talented. I am now jumping into the second in the series, The Twelve.

Any additional comments?

The writing is excellent, the pace fairly slow - written as a memoir to a former lover, this is the story of a man whose family inherited an approach to time travel - or did it? At times confusing, at times incredibly impressive with the writing, I occasionally wondered if it would ever finish. The narration is excellent.

Any additional comments?

If Philip K. Dick hadn't spent so much of his energy chasing that dark haired girl, working feverishly under the effect of amphetamines to put out enough novels to pay alimony, and laboring under the weight of a culture defined by cynicism and ennui, perhaps he could have produced something as polished as this.
After all, the book has alternative timelines, a U.S. President who interrupts all citizens' phone calls and television shows (and as an apology pays for dessert), and simulacra that are created at a dating site. But it is also carefully crafted, well-paced, and polished. There was one plot diversion that was not well enough explained, but all in all, this was a very enjoyable, intelligent novel. (I do need to point out that I hadn't heard the word "desultory" used since Simon & Garfunkel's first album, and it was used three times in the book - but ok.)
The narrator did a great job of shifting through the characters and their accents and distinguishing features. And I will definitely be getting Palmer's other novel.

Spoiler alert!

A genius with an eidetic memory is contracted to investigate a transporter device, a device whose design is kept secret even from the government that funded it. It turns out to be based on formulas from a centuries-old manuscript, and - amazingly - isn't a transporter at all, but a gate between universes that exchanges people for their doppelgangers. At least most of the time. Sometimes it exchanges for creatures that are not very similar at all.

I guess I became disenchanted with the plot when, after a very significant event that would persuade nearly any rational being to at least pause, our hero did not even try to tell the learned scientists exactly what they might be facing.

On the other hand, the narrator is talented.
