Historia
When a state trooper appeared at Rachel Zimmerman’s door to report that her husband had jumped to his death off a nearby bridge, she fell to her knees, unable to fully absorb the news. How could the man she’d married, a devoted father and robotics professor at MIT, have committed such a violent act? How would she explain this to her young daughters? And could she have stopped him? A longtime journalist, she probed obsessively, believing answers would help her survive. She interviewed doctors, suicide researchers, and a man who jumped off the same bridge and lived.

Historia
Brandi Carlile was born into a musically gifted, impoverished family on the outskirts of Seattle and grew up in a constant state of change, moving from house to house, trailer to trailer, 14 times in as many years. Though imperfect in every way, her dysfunctional childhood was as beautiful as it was strange, and as nurturing as it was difficult. At the age of five, Brandi contracted bacterial meningitis, which almost took her life, leaving an indelible mark on her formative years and altering her journey into young adulthood.

Historia
For years as an award-winning war reporter, Sebastian Junger traveled to many front lines and frequently put his life at risk. And yet, the closest he ever came to death was the summer of 2020 while spending a quiet afternoon at the New England home he shared with his wife and two young children. Crippled by abdominal pain, Junger was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Once there, he began slipping away. As blackness encroached, he was visited by his dead father, inviting Junger to join him.

Putrescence the place and time perfectly
Revisado: 05-06-24
I appreciated each of the characters and how much they reminded me of people I knew growing up in Boston around that time. The powerful message of the dangers of fear, anger and racism are very clear. I also loved the multiple references to being human with all its fall ability and lastly, I loved that a woman from the projects was the heroine of this novel.
One note on the narrator is that the accent was very inconsistent and sometimes sounded more New York than Boston

Historia
In this revolutionary book, renowned physician Gabor Maté eloquently dissects how in Western countries that pride themselves on their healthcare systems, chronic illness and general ill health are on the rise. Nearly 70 percent of Americans are on at least one prescription drug; more than half take two. In Canada, every fifth person has high blood pressure. In Europe, hypertension is diagnosed in more than 30 percent of the population. And everywhere, adolescent mental illness is on the rise. So what is really “normal” when it comes to health?

The importance of authentic agency and activism
Revisado: 11-24-23
I really liked the clarification of how our”normal” society contributes to traumatic experience. I. Certain areas, there was a tendency toward reductionism-addiction and politics for example. They were very ambitious in the breadth of work and unfortunately this was also their downfall. I still would recommend parts of this book particularly with regard to the infant development section.

Historia
The Earth had buckled, and, in that movement, all that was not in its place fell upon the Earth’s children, upon the blameless as well as the guilty, without discrimination. At the end of a long sweltering day, as markets and businesses begin to close for the evening, an earthquake of 7.0 magnitude shakes the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince. Award-winning author Myriam J. A. Chancy masterfully charts the inner lives of the characters affected by the disaster

I am a foreigner who came to Haiti on January 27, 2010 wanting to help. Haiti and her people captured my heart and is forever a part of my life.
This account of these individuals and their connections captures my experience of the stories I carry and the language and culture I respect.
