Historia
On July 12th, 1776, Captain James Cook, already lionized as the greatest explorer in British history, set off on his third voyage in his ship the HMS Resolution. Two-and-a-half years later, on a beach on the island of Hawaii, Cook was killed in a conflict with native Hawaiians. How did Cook, who was unique among captains for his respect for Indigenous peoples and cultures, come to that fatal moment? Hampton Sides’ bravura account of Cook’s last journey both wrestles with Cook’s legacy and provides a thrilling narrative of the titanic efforts and continual danger that characterized exploration.

Never Disappointed With Hampton Sides Books
Revisado: 04-20-24
Another incredibly well researched and written account of naval history by Hampton Sides. Amazing feats of global navigation on 90 foot wind powered crafts.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Historia
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Great writing
Revisado: 02-20-16
Where does A Man Called Ove rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It is definitely in the upper tier of my audio books.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Man Called Ove?
When Ove confronted the "man in the white shirt" who came to take his neighbor to a government facility. "Who will take care of him?" asked the man in the white shirt. "We will!" was the the reply of the neighbors.
What about George Newbern’s performance did you like?
Did a great job of presenting Ove as one who wanted to be a "grumpy old man" but could not because of his heart.
If you could rename A Man Called Ove, what would you call it?
Maybe, "Why Ove Bought An iPad".
Any additional comments?
Love the book. Enjoyed audio so much I bought Kindle version to read.

One of the Best Narrators Ever
Revisado: 02-20-16
Where does Secrets of a Charmed Life rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I listen to many audio books during my commuting and this is in my top 5.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Secrets of a Charmed Life?
For me it was the very ominous day of September 7, 1940.
Have you listened to any of Alana Kerr’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This was my first and I think she is one of the very best I have ever heard.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
YES
Any additional comments?
Just a tremendous performance by this narrator. Almost like listening to an old radio theater production.

Historia
At the age of 22, Jennifer Worth left her comfortable home to move into a convent and become a midwife in postwar London’s East End slums. The colorful characters she met while delivering babies all over London - from the plucky, warm-hearted nuns with whom she lived to the woman with 24 children who couldn't speak English to the prostitutes and dockers of the city’s seedier side - illuminate a fascinating time in history.

Stick with it
Revisado: 05-08-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
It may seem a bit tedious initially but stick with it. I would definitely recommend this book. I was entertained and I learned a great deal. The performance by Nicola Barber is as good as any audiobook I have ever enjoyed. There is nothing I enjoy more than a writer who is a great storyteller and certainly this author is just that. I found the conclusion to be profound and possibly life changing.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
This is a great book to listen to in multiple sittings. It is a collection of stories and I found each to be something to pondered and reflected upon for some time.
