Historia
For a period of seven years, Wilfred Thesiger canoed through the marshes at the confluence of Iraq's Tigris and Euphrates rivers, living among the native Madan tribes and their islands made of reeds. Now extinct, their ancient way of life is speculated to have existed for 5,000 years, going back to the days of ancient Sumer, and possessed a unique culture found nowhere else in the Middle East. Thesiger documents the tribes' conflicts, traditions, cuisine, relationships, justice systems, and art, and reveals how they built their unique water-borne society

Another great story
Revisado: 04-10-23
It’s always entertaining to hear his matter-of-fact description of people and events. Take everything with a grain of salt, but he certainly has had many interesting experiences. The narrator is perfect for Thesiger.

Historia
First published in 1865 by The Russian Messenger, War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy is considered to be one of the longest novels ever written, although Tolstoy himself did not consider this book "a novel". Interspersed between narrative chapters concerning five aristocratic families are several philosophical and historical chapters against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, where Tolstoy weaves a tale of drama with characters that include statesmen and generals of that era, mixing domestic life, balls, and war councils into one epic story.

Great reader, classic story
Revisado: 10-10-21
Tolstoy is classic and this story is perhaps the most well known. Being as long as it is, it drags on a little. It is worthwhile nonetheless. Phillippe Duquenoy has a great voice and does great character voices. I felt that the pace was a little slow and wound up listening on a higher speed (also partly to cut down on the lengthy runtime). But he was great to listen to at any pace.

Historia
Jerusalem is the universal city, the capital of two peoples, the shrine of three faiths; it is the prize of empires, the site of Judgement Day and the battlefield of today’s clash of civilizations. From King David to Barack Obama, from the birth of Judaism, Christianity and Islam to the Israel-Palestine conflict, this is the epic history of three thousand years of faith, slaughter, fanaticism and coexistence. This is how Jerusalem became Jerusalem, and the only city that exists twice - in heaven and on earth.

Biased History
Revisado: 08-23-21
The author's personal bias, especially towards Christianity, but including all organized religions (which he more often describes as "mysticism") makes you wonder why he cares about Jerusalem at all since it is a city made important by people who truly live by faith. It is slowly revealed that perhaps his interest in the city runs in the family as his ancestors played various roles in governing. But the reader is left with the impression that he'd be happier if all the "mystics" of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam would just leave his 'precious' city alone. If you're looking for a true history stick with tried-and-true historians with a history of genuine research rather than the regurgitated, cynical, second-hand opinions we're left with here.
