Historia
The Gardener Estate is one of the most storied and beloved places on the West Coast: a magnificent house in vast formal grounds, home to a family that shaped California—and fought hard to conceal the turmoil and eccentricities within their walls. And now, just as the turmoil seems buried and the Estate prepares to move into a new future, construction work unearths a grim relic of the estate's history: a skull, hidden away some fifty years ago.

Revisado: 01-07-23
As several reviewers have said, intriguing plot twisting through time, strong characterization, excellent narration. You'll know you are in the hands of two masters - King and Leheny.

Historia
In the near future, advances in medicine and quantum computing make human cloning a reality. For the wealthy, cheating death is the ultimate luxury. To anticloning militants, it’s an abomination against nature. For young Constance “Con” D’Arcy, who was gifted her own clone by her late aunt, it’s terrifying. After a routine monthly upload of her consciousness - stored for that inevitable transition - something goes wrong. When Con wakes up in the clinic, it’s eighteen months later. Her recent memories are missing. Her original, she’s told, is dead.

Engaging SF/Mystery with Excellent Narration
Revisado: 09-14-21
FitzSimmons brings the skills of a polished novelist to this near-future mystery/suspense/SF combination. Someone compared it to Koontz and King and that works for me. Looking forward to the next one. I first became aware of narrator January LaVoy when listening to The 10,000 Doors of January. She is in an exclusive league with Julia Whelan and a half-dozen others. Such a pleasure to listen to an engrossing tale read by a master performer.

Historia
Enola Holmes is the much younger sister of her more famous brothers, Sherlock and Mycroft. But she has all the wits, skills, and sleuthing inclinations of them both. When a young professional woman, Miss Letitia Glover, shows up on Sherlock's doorstep, desperate to learn more about the fate of her twin sister, it is Enola who steps up. It seems her sister, the former Felicity Glover, married the earl of Dunhench and, per a curt note from the earl, has died. But Letitia Glover is convinced this isn't the truth, that she'd know - she'd feel - if her twin had died.

Good story - Excellent narrator
Revisado: 09-02-21
It's great to see a new "full sized" Enola Holmes novel from Nancy Springer. I wish they were longer but apparently this length has always been Springer's sweet spot. The new narrator Tamaryn Payne is an excellent choice to replace Katherine Kellgren, who died tragically young in 2018. See: https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/nytimes/name/katherine-kjellgren-obituary?pid=187871203.

Historia
Viktor Orlov had a longstanding appointment with death. Once Russia’s richest man, he now resides in splendid exile in London, where he has waged a tireless crusade against the authoritarian kleptocrats who have seized control of the Kremlin. His mansion in Chelsea’s exclusive Cheyne Walk is one of the most heavily protected private dwellings in London. Yet somehow, on a rainy summer evening, in the midst of a global pandemic, Russia’s vengeful president finally manages to cross Orlov’s name off his kill list.

Great insights into international corruption
Revisado: 07-21-21
Daniel Silva managed to publish a book that includes the pandemic, Russian interference, global financial corruption, Trump's defeat, the Capitol riots, and Biden's inauguration. The fact-based afterword should be published as a download and shared widely. Edoardo Ballerini is a good choice to take up George Guidall's mantle. Not replace - can't do that - but "take up."

But no one will admit that his death wasn't an accident - or that Mahit might be next to die, during a time of political instability in the highest echelons of the imperial court. Now, Mahit must discover who is behind the murder, rescue herself, and save her station from Teixcalaan's unceasing expansion.

Landon and a little Kindle
Revisado: 04-19-20
Complex SF books, richly layered with fresh ideas, are hard to start purely in audio. I sometimes buy the Kindle version and supplement listening with reading. It's especially helpful for sorting out the strange names of things and conversation taking place in newly invented cultures. I did that for A Memory Called Empire and drifted from just hanging on for awhile to really coming to love this book.

Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, you'll be first there, it's all yours, you're the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder. An Acquired Taste - that I've Acquired!
Revisado: 03-24-20
So have all the readers here who gave Songbird five stars. I don't mind the slow...allows the reader to sink deeper into the imagined world. My favorite character this time around is DCI Cora Freeman - aka "The Terminator." I was pleased to discover who gave her that nickname. Especially excited to see Book 2 will be available in April. Gildart Jackson... you just hate how perfect he is for these stories.

I mostly agree...
Revisado: 02-02-20
... with the review who wrote "...I like strong women characters, love stories, westerns, magic, and intrigue." More sex than love but not overdone and fits with character. Excellent new series from Harris. The fairly slow pace is what I like in an audiobook... full value for your credit.

Gore Vidal's Narratives of Empire are highly readable political and social histories of the United States. Witty, ironic, pragmatic tales that strip away the myths and help us better understand what we've always been about.

Historia
My name is Opal Yong-ae, and I’m a Cleaner. At least, I used to be. Thanks to the supernatural bad luck that turns everything I do against me, these days I’m more of a walking disaster. Getting rid of this curse is the only way to get my life back. Unfortunately, dragon magic is every bit as sneaky and deadly as the monsters behind it, and just as hard to beat.

A drag on novel
Revisado: 07-07-19
Imaginative writing, interesting world building, but (as another reviewer said) "her broken magic and issues with her dad seemed to go on and on." And on and on, Same with the relationship with Nick. I finally gave up after her 5th or 6th interior pep talk. To be fair, I'm not the target audience, but the characters are a little old for so much teen angst.

Alexander Grant is a little too good at a few too many things. Two dozen martial arts. Twice that many languages. Chess, the piano, sports, forging excused absences, you name it. He graduated high school top of his class 17 times. Of course, no one knows any of this. Not that he wants to go unnoticed. It’s just safer that way.

Good book, great narration, no chapter breaks
Revisado: 06-27-19
Interesting story concept with a YA slant. I'll listen to Wil Wheaton read the phonebook, if you remember those. But come on, Audible. No chapter breaks? Like many other listeners, I'm sure, I use my books to ease me into sleep at night and it's hell to find your place in the morning when the entire book is a single "chapter."
