Historia
Twelfth-century Europe. Newly crowned King Philip of France is determined to restore his nation to its former empire and bring glory to his name. But when his greatest enemy, King Henry of England, threatens to end his reign before it can even begin, Philip is forced to make a precarious alliance with Henry’s volatile son—risking both his throne, and his heart.

Wonderful narration
Revisado: 01-12-24
Wonderfully written and achingly beautiful at times. I had to listen to it in chunks because I was so afraid of what would happen! I also appreciated the author's notes about how and why she deviated from the historical narrative. I love queer historical stories, partly as a reminder that we have always existed.
With audiobooks, the narrator(so) can make or break the experience, and I am delighted at the choice of actors for both Richard and Philip. They are utterly perfect.

Historia
In publishing-speak, here's what we at the LQ office sometimes describe as the Queer lovechild of Sholem Aleichem and Philip Roth: Uriel the angel and Little Ash (short for Ashmedai) are the only two supernatural creatures in their shtetl (which is so tiny, it doesn't have a name other than Shtetl). The angel and the demon have been studying together for centuries, but pogroms and the search for a new life have drawn all the young people from their village to America. When one of those young emigrants goes missing, Uriel and Little Ash set off to find her.

Captivating
Revisado: 08-28-23
What an utterly charming story. I was a little apprehensive to start reading it in case sad, bad things happen to people, but despite sad, bad things happening at times, it remains wonderful and uplifting and at times very funny.

Historia
Abandoned by his father, Gareth Inglis grew up lonely, prickly, and used to disappointment. Still, he longs for a connection. When he meets a charming stranger, he falls head over heels—until everything goes wrong and he's left alone again. Then Gareth's father dies, turning the shabby London clerk into Sir Gareth, with a grand house on the remote Romney Marsh and a family he doesn't know. The Marsh is another world, a strange, empty place notorious for its ruthless gangs of smugglers. And one of them is dangerously familiar…

Oh lord, the narrator
Revisado: 04-04-23
I absolutely adore KJ Charles, and this is a gorgeous story, but the narrator is truly awful. Monotonous, staccato delivery, even though the accents are decent. Charles and her characters deserve so much better, and I hope the publishers will find someone else.

Utterly gorgeous
Revisado: 03-12-23
A beautiful, gorgeously written story that at times absolutely tore my heart in two. I have great admiration for an author skilled enough to have me sitting upright, hands to my mouth, riveted. And what a wonderful portrayal of Morgan.
Loved Vanessa Kirby's narration as well. The narrator can truly make or break an audiobook, and Vanessa did a brilliant job.

Revisado: 11-30-22
I’ve become a huge Lindsay Buroker fan in a few short months – I honestly don’t know how she continuously manages to write stories that are engaging, clever, often very funny and sometimes straight-up adorable, with genuinely loveable characters. Her work gives me great joy and this is a particularly lovely series finale.

Buroker at her best
Revisado: 10-31-22
A poignant, bittersweet ending to a great series. Buroker is exceptionally gifted at creating characters that quietly creep their way into the reader's heart – how often is a cold-blooded assassin portrayed as worthy of love and redemption? I really loved being able to experience the story from Sicarius' perspective during the last two novels. Vivienne Leheny is an excellent reader, as well suited to Buroker's work as Caitlin Davies.
