How did I miss this in life?
Revisado: 04-10-25
I must confess to having read an abridged, children’s version of Gulliver’s Travels as a child—mostly centered on his account of the Lilliputians.
As an adult, it is so much more! The satire and social commentary is pertinent yet today, while the dry humor rivals that of contemporary writers.
If the older English throws you, I highly suggest you lays hands upon the audiobook version narrated by David Hyde Pierce! He brings it to life so that you can forget you’re reading a 300-year old work!

Historia
First published in 1861, The Mill on the Floss was a best-seller in its day. This classic novel explores the traditions and moral expectations of an English rural community. Maggie Tulliver is a girl of uncontrollable romantic ideals. But her brother, along with most of society, cannot accept her brashness and vitality. Narrator Jill Tanner gracefully unfolds this tragic tale of love and loss.

Long, but worthwhile.
Revisado: 10-22-24
I am fond of George Eliot’s writing. The Mill on the Floss is classified now as “historical fiction”, but at the time of writing was more contemporary and thus gives us some insight into the constraints and challenges of Victorian England, reflecting not only the prejudices of the era, but foreshadowing of the changes to come.

Good for break from more serious works
Revisado: 09-05-23
Of course, as a fan, I had to listen. It's not great, but I have read a lot worse. It's a fun diversion that leaves you wondering how much about it was true.

Predictable...
Revisado: 09-26-22
The premise is good, but the execution leaves a bit to be desired, as it is far too easy to rightly assume the endings. I'm glad it was included in my subscription. Otherwise, I am a fan of Weir, this simply doesn't seem to be his best work.

Historia
When the British fought the young United States during the War of 1812, they knew that taking the mouth of the Mississippi River was the key to crippling their former colony. Capturing the city of New Orleans and stopping trade up the river sounded like a simple task - New Orleans was far away from Washington, out of sight and out of mind for the politicians. What the British didn't count on was the power of General Andrew Jackson.

Great book, lousy listen!
Revisado: 02-08-22
Painful narration of a worthwhile book. Only buying Kilmeade in hardcopy in the future... have another on order at present.
That being said, if you don't mind hearing an amateurish narration, it is worth the time. A clear presentation of the facts and an appreciation of the participants as they stood within it. No glorification, no judgement... the way I like my history presented.

The funniest nerdiest book you may ever listen to.
Revisado: 10-22-21
While you might be tempted to skip the nerdy bits, but they're an integral part of this great story, perfectly narrated by Wil Wheaton. It's delightfully funny and will make you believe there's really a side to humanity that's worth saving.
