Historia
Through an unforgettable cast of characters, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Rhodes explains how wood gave way to coal and coal made room for oil, as we now turn to natural gas, nuclear power, and renewable energy. Rhodes looks back on five centuries of progress, through such influential figures as Queen Elizabeth I, King James I, Benjamin Franklin, Herman Melville, John D. Rockefeller, and Henry Ford.

Encyclopedic in scope
Revisado: 11-05-18
I always enjoy Rhodes extensively researched books and his perspective on the history. This begins with wood burning in England and ends with current debates about fossil fuels, nuclear power, and the alternatives. I think a broader and more independent perspective is needed on energy issues today. I wish Rhodes had written a whole book on part 3. He doesn't seem to shrink from controversy.
As for the accents, I thought they were pretty well done and spiced up the narration a bit. I was more irked by his pronunciation of giga- and Willamette, but, overall, I thought it was professional and well done.

Moby-Dick is widely considered to be the Great American Novel and a treasure of world literature. The story details the adventures of the wandering sailor Ishmael and his voyage on the whale ship Pequod, commanded by Captain Ahab. Ishmael soon learns that Ahab seeks one specific whale: Moby Dick, a ferocious, enigmatic white sperm whale. In a previous encounter, the whale destroyed Ahab's boat and bit off his leg. And Ahab intends to take revenge.

Yes, bad narration
Revisado: 08-24-14
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Ha! Well, I'd tighten up the writing some, maybe add a boy wizard... That captain is really a downer.
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator has a lovely resonant voice, but he seems to be coming upon the words for the first time as he reads them. He mispronounces some fairly common words as if he doesn't quite know where the story is going from one phrase to the next.

Historia
Niall Ferguson follows the money to tell the human story behind the evolution of finance, from its origins in ancient Mesopotamia to the latest upheavals on what he calls Planet Finance. Bread, cash, dosh, dough, loot, lucre, moolah, readies, the wherewithal: Call it what you like, it matters. To Christians, love of it is the root of all evil. To generals, it's the sinews of war. To revolutionaries, it's the chains of labor. Niall Ferguson shows that finance is in fact the foundation of human progress.

What made the experience of listening to The Ascent of Money the most enjoyable?
It's a fascinating history well told by Ferguson. The narration, while well done, is a little disconcerting in that the narrator's accent is so different from Ferguson's. I wonder how my impressions would change if the author had narrated it himself.
