So close yet so far

The book was great for a while but then crashed and burned. Severely let down in the end. The main character went through a traumatic experience and all we got to hear about is all the bad.

It is as good as all the hype. I binged it in 24 hours. The characters are so well done and the performances are stellar. Great story line.

It is sometimes difficult to remember that in war there are innocents on all sides who suffer. German citizens who had no connection to the atrocities committed by their countrymen nonetheless endured great hardships because of them.

It is hard to feel an ounce of compassion for the author when she bellyaching about how “horrible” her life continues to be after WWII.
Yes, she was only born in Germany during the war, but her lack of awareness to the suffering that occurred not only when she was a child, but as an adult, is just simply awful. For every Jewish life that was lost, that would have traded a concentration camp uniform for a maid’s uniform in a heartbeat, this book should never have been written, let alone published.
Her lack of humility is truly astounding.

Trudy has a daughter in the middle of a major rebellion, a two-timing husband who has been cheating for their entire married life, and a mother with Alzheimer's residing in the local nursing home.

Story is fine, but narrator is too old for role.

The story is a light read without much reflection needed on the readers part, as any life changing moments are either spoon feed, or take the entire book to come to the obvious conclusion.
The main character is supposed to be 39-40, but the narrator is MUCH older and her voice is a constant contradiction to the character at the most basic level.
In short, I wouldn’t recommend this book to a friend.

Edna is right, Vivian is not an interesting person

I went into this book with no expectations, and still manage to get the feeling disappointed. Literally, a story about nothing. Surely there are far more interesting people to write about.
Starts slow, is slow in the middle, ends gliding on neutral. One GIANT bore.
