Historia
With her remarkable insight into the human condition and silences that contain multitudes, Elizabeth Strout returns to the town of Crosby, Maine, and to her beloved cast of characters—Lucy Barton, Olive Kitteridge, Bob Burgess, and more—as they deal with a shocking crime in their midst, fall in love and yet choose to be apart, and grapple with the question, as Lucy Barton puts it, “What does anyone’s life mean?”

Like making a lot of new friends - wisdom, too.

I’m not familiar with this series, so found the beginning a little challenging as so many characters were introduced and it was hard to keep them straight. But once I got the hang of them all, I found a lot to like. The story is a combo of awe and acceptance of life and there are practical life lessons here. The performance is very good with a tone that’s well suited to the story.

Worked for me - a miracle!
Revisado: 08-18-24
I recently had sciatica so badly, I could barely breathe. For weeks, it was ruining my life. I tried PT, acupuncture, pills, exercises and more - mostly to no avail. I remembered hearing about this book years ago and immediately listened to it. While this sounds hard to believe, I took Dr. Sarno’s advice and by the next day, it was much diminished. In a week, it was totally gone. It’s a shift in thought and it worked perfectly. Hard to explain but surely worth a try for anything back related.

When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010—and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later—she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone. Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time.

I totally enjoyed this book and loved Whoopi’s reading which is lively and personal, as if you’re sitting right there with her. Her mother was a fascinating woman who did so much with so little. Whoopi is a true and honest individual and this short book about her life and her family was a joy to listen to.

Historia
In 2018, novelist Jami Attenberg, faced with a looming deadline, needed writing inspiration. Using a bootcamp model, she and a friend set out to write one thousand words daily for two weeks straight. They opened this practice to Attenberg’s online community and soon hundreds then thousands of people started using the #1000WordsofSummer hashtag to track their work and support one another. What began as a simple challenge between two friends has become a literary movement—write 1,000 words per day without judgement, or bias, or concerns about writer’s block, and see what comes of it.

Revisado: 02-29-24
As a slightly lapsed writer, I devoured the honest and extremely helpful insights in this book. The author has so many interesting things to say about the joys and the challenges of the writing life, as do the many well known writers who also add their varied and inspiring thoughts. Loved every word.
I will often think back to what I learned here.

Historia
Throughout her childhood, Safiya Sinclair’s father, a volatile reggae musician and a militant adherent to a strict sect of Rastafari, was obsessed with the ever-present threat of the corrupting evils of the Western world outside their home, and worried that womanhood would make Safiya and her sisters morally weak and impure. For him, a woman’s highest virtue was her obedience.

I am a writer and I love the island of Jamaica so this story appealed to me on many levels. A heartfelt memoir about a girl growing up in a fascinating Rastafarian family, both brilliant and brutal. Her struggles and successes were beautifully described in poetic language, as she is a poet. Sinclair’s performance is lovely to listen to and I feel like she’s almost a friend, along with her amazing siblings and her mother. Loved every minute.

Historia
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Miss them all now that I’ve finished.
Revisado: 09-15-23
The narration by Maura Tierney is excellent and lovely to listen to. (Love the trend of using actors for audio books.) And this sweeping story, while sagged slightly in the middle, turned out to be quite wonderful for most of the story. Not many books make me cry, but the ending of this family story brought me to tears. Sorry to let all these characters go.

Historia
Anne Hull grew up in rural Central Florida, barefoot half the time and running through the orange groves her father’s family had worked for generations. The ground trembled from the vibrations of bulldozers and jackhammers clearing land for Walt Disney World. “Look now,” her father told her as they rode through the mossy landscape together. “It will all be gone.” But the real threat was at home, where Hull was pulled between her idealistic but self-destructive father and her mother, a glamorous outsider from Brooklyn struggling with her own aspirations.

Vivid story of a Florida long gone
Revisado: 07-28-23
I totally enjoyed this audio book and the author’s narration is excellent. I also had a free-range childhood and although very different from hers, I loved hearing her stories. She was such an observant and resilient child through many family ups and downs, often able to adapt and find the good in the family’s changing fortunes. The Florida atmosphere of the 1960s is beautifully described throughout. I finished it today and was sorry to have it end. It’s heartfelt, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, always interesting.

Historia
After her conversation with goop founder and CEO Gwyneth Paltrow, Penda N’diaye speaks with three women of different ages about being “detectives of their own pleasure”. N’diaye, who is the founder of Pro Hoe, a brand that focuses on sexual liberation in Black and Brown communities, explores the different ways we can experience pleasure. And she searches for answers to these questions: Why can satisfying sex be difficult to come by? How do we open up to exploring and expressing our desires? What can we look forward to along the way?

I am as open as many New Yorkers but given that there are just three guests, I found this line up hard to relate to. One heterosexual and older, one trans and one non-binary polyamorous unicorn. Liked some of it but just seems to be trying way too hard to be woke. The host is very good.

Historia
A man and a woman are seated next to each other on a plane. They get to talking - about their destination, their careers, their families. Grievances are aired, family tragedies discussed, marriages and divorces analyzed. An intimacy is established as two strangers contrast their own fictions about their lives. Outline is a novel in 10 conversations. Spare and stark, it follows a novelist teaching a course in creative writing during one oppressively hot summer in Athens.

Depressing and grim.
Revisado: 11-01-22
While it’s clear Cusk is a skilled writer, this book is a very depressing collection of encounters the main character has during the course of a week as she teaches a writing class in Athens. As the characters were brought to life, each one was worse than the next. Self-involved, almost heartless people who complain constantly about what it takes to raise children, along with some awful accounts of animal cruelty that honestly made me cringe because of the callousness. I basically hated every one of these navel-gazers and wished they would all go away. It’s all very pompous and the reader is very pompous and annoying, as well, making it even worse. I was close to finishing it because she is a good writer, but after many hours listening to them all complain about their lives, I couldn’t even finish the book.
