So over-written it’s unreadable

Authors should write so their readers can enjoy the book, not so they can impress their readers with their massive vocabulary (or ability to use a thesaurus). This book is the latter … in spades. Please, just tell the story, nice and tidily, with creativity instead of bombasity. (Oops! I used one of their too-fancy-dancy words.)

It’s great to see Stephenson back in form after several disappointing outings starting with D.O.D.O. This isn’t as good as his best, but it’s Stevenson at his near-best, and that’s better than most writers today.

This tale deserves all the praise that has been heaped on it and all the longevity its popularity has enjoyed. My only quibble is with the narration. Guidall does well enough but barely. More variety in the voices is needed - slight differences in accent and more variety in pitch would have helped greatly.

This is a good story for younger readers just getting into science fiction. Unfortunately the narration is awful, poorly paced with emphasis in the wrong places and not much difference in the sound of the various characters’ voices.

Not surprisingly for a book by a comic book author, Alliances sits between a young adult book and a grown up’s book. There was some heavy-handed generic character assassination at the outset - conservatives as pimply faced rejects with the worst extreme beliefs - but thankfully that was dropped quickly and the story got better from there. Not so with the utterly uninflected, slow-paced narration, which is just inexcusably bad. Turn the speed up to 1.25 or 1.5 and it becomes bearable.

You can’t fault the author for lack of trying - he really dreamt up some interesting story lines. But wrapping it in a con job frame makes for an unengaging yawner. There are so many better frameworks Kunsken have chosen. Too bad he didn’t; too bad an over-amped narrator was chosen for the under-amped story.

A story of one man, two nations and possibly the fate of the entire world, wonderfully written and narrated.

Why make us wait through all but six minutes of the book before giving us the information needed to make this morass of words interesting? After all that, it wasn’t interesting enough to make all the plodding that preceded worthwhile. As for the narration, I’m glad for John Lee that he’s mastered so many accents, but really, would all those accents still exist in a far-future, much-merged world? Don’t think so.

The plot cheat wrecks the book

Books with plots that require the non-disclosure of key information between parties to keep the story alive are juvenile. Run Program has this problem in spades because the character that wants to disclose the information processes things six times faster than those who want to receive it. As a result, the whole thing drags on for no sensible reason.

I gave this book several hours of my time. It gave me nothing back. There’s a seed of a story in there, but who has the patience to bare the author’s pretension and verbosity to find it? Money wasted.
