The story of Emperor Hadrian and Empress Sabina
Revisado: 04-20-25
All of Kate Quinn’s novels are superb. This series is exceptional and taught me so much about the lives of the Romans. She is so good at painting a portrait of the intertwining lives of her characters complex personalities, and bringing, what seems at first a remote and distant history, to life. I appreciate her remarkable abilities very much and would recommend all of her books.

Good premise but…
Revisado: 07-01-24
The premise of the story had so much potential but it dragged in places. Plot line was Somewhat predictable. Feels like it was written with a screenplay in mind.

Historia
On a spring morning in London, 1875, Charles Lenox agrees to take time away from his busy schedule as a Member of Parliament to meet an old protege's client at Charing Cross. But when their cryptic encounter seems to lead, days later, to the murder of an innocuous country squire, this fast favor draws Lenox inexorably back into his old profession. Soon he realizes that, far from concluding the murderer's business, this body is only the first step in a cruel plan, many years in the plotting. Where will he strike next?

I am so enjoying all of these Inspector Lenox mysteries by Charles Finch. And the narration is quite superb. I hope the BBC will adapt these stories for a series.

Historia
For millennia the location of the Nile River’s headwaters was shrouded in mystery. In the 19th century, there was a frenzy of interest in ancient Egypt. At the same time, European powers sent off waves of explorations intended to map the unknown corners of the globe—and extend their colonial empires.

Magnificent storyteller
Revisado: 05-11-23
I loved the movie, Mountains of the Moon, about Sir Richard Burton’s search for the source of the White Nile. This book did not disappoint and combines excellent storytelling with rigorous research. I am hooked on Candice Millard and can’t wait to start the next one!
