Historia
Had it not been for the scent bottles, it is unlikely that Daniel Shelbourne, Viscount Reculver, and Anna Hawthorne of Hawthorne’s Porcelain would ever have met. Daniel’s late father left him an impoverished estate – which he had expected – and unexplained debts, which he hadn’t. Anna inherited a thriving business, along with the knowledge and passion required to run it.

A Decent Vacation Read
Revisado: 04-15-25
I didn’t dislike the book, but it certainly wasn’t a masterpiece. The plot was oversimplified and underdeveloped in some areas, and the antagonists lacked depth. The narrator was quite good. Overall, an adequate read/listen for a beach vacation.

Historia
As the London Daily Gazette’s popular gossip columnist, she is extremely adept at sneaking into houses, assuming disguises and overseeing a vast network of spies to ensure she stays abreast of the beau monde’s comings and goings. If it sometimes seems as though she was hiding behind the settee during a particularly fierce quarrel between a husband and his wife, it’s most likely because she was hiding behind the settee during their fierce quarrel.

Lacks Spark
Revisado: 12-03-24
I tried listening to this book on three different occasions (each separated by several months); I never made it through the fourth chapter. This cozy mystery lacks the spark to ignite my interest. The only deadly aspect is its dullness.

It’s A Stretch
Revisado: 09-20-23
It’s a stretch for the plot and narration to escape mediocrity, but the last quarter of the story manages to push the book to a passable level.

Almost but Not Quite
Revisado: 07-21-23
Jane Harper wrote an excellent book compared to many authors in this genre, but it sadly falls short when compared to her previous stories. The pacing is slow, the plot has potential for complexity but falls flat, and the climax is lackluster. I ended up skipping through large portions of the last ten chapters. I’d still recommend the book to others because even Jane Harper’s mediocre efforts far outshine many of her contemporaries.

Best In The Series
Revisado: 05-16-23
I think this is the best book of this series thus far. Every aspect seems a little bit smoother than previous outings. It’s not a deep book, but it’s just as a cosy mystery should be in my opinion.

Ho-hum and Humdrum
Revisado: 11-28-22
I quite like this series and this author, but this is the second story in the series that plods along to the point of tedium. I’ve had similar experiences while reading other series by the same author: by book six or seven the character and plot progression slows to the speed of fossilization. I think I’ll wait until the release of book 10 or 11 and pick back up.
This particular story would have been more enjoyable if condensed and edited into a novella.

Pompous, Misses the Mark
Revisado: 01-31-22
It is an interesting story, but Mr. Laux comes off as a pompous know-it-all. The placement of his numerous sighs and “umm’s” during the audio gives the impression of an individual who frequently roles his eyes at the sheer stupidity of others.
The title is also misleading. There is very little discussion or analysis of photo evidence, and Mr. Laux surprisingly fails to qualify his opinions with evidence (factual or circumstantial). He may provide qualification in subsequent episodes, but this episode sits squarely in a salacious, attention-seeking category of story telling that Mr. Laux proudly declares he is not a part of.

Historia
William Warwick has always wanted to be a detective, and decides, much to his father’s dismay, that rather than become a lawyer like his father, Sir Julian Warwick QC, and his sister, Grace, he will join London’s Metropolitan Police Force. After graduating from university, William begins a career that will define his life: from his early months on the beat under the watchful eye of his first mentor, Constable Fred Yates, to his first high-stakes case as a fledgling detective in Scotland Yard’s arts and antiquities squad.
