The Civil War: A Narrative, Volume 1 begins one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. All the great battles are here, of course, from Bull Run through Shiloh, the Seven Days Battles, and Antietam, but so are the smaller ones: Ball's Bluff, Fort Donelson, Pea Ridge, Island Ten, New Orleans, and Monitor versus Merrimac.

OUTSTANDING! I'M PROUD TO BE A BLACK AMERICAN!!
- De The Louligan en 08-22-13
The narrator was fabulous and really push the story along, and I hung on every word!
Revisado: 08-18-24
I love the bread and the depth of the story and the details of everything that was happening and all the different areas simultaneously. I have several so many books on the Civil War and the main personalities but I still learned so many new things in this terrific book! No detail left out

Historia
A Lifetime to Get Here: San Miguel de Allende, the first in a series of two, was created from the author’s almost-daily blogs about visiting San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, for increasing amounts of time and in different seasons, spanning winter 2009 to the conclusion of 2012. The culmination of those years was the sale of her house in her fourth-generation hometown of Philadelphia and her permanent settlement in Mexico.

The story would have been better without Claudias left slanted politics, interjected throughout
Revisado: 11-04-23
Claudia's book was really interesting listen. As I am a very big fan of San Miguel De Allende myself and I've traveled there often. I miss it and thought it would be fun to hear somebody's else's experiences.
Yes, it is an autobiography so she included her personal feelings, but they were too many blanket liberal leaning blanket statements and it read more like a teenage diary than necessary.
The low points were the whining about climate change & SMaa running out of water, a season of no rain, being blamed on climate change, whereas seasons of not enough rain or historically recorded and are often times, followed by seasons of way too much rain, etc. plus her adoration of Obama.
So much virtue signaling every few chapters was off putting & exhausting but it was punctuated by many fun anecdotes about life in Mexico.

Historia
In the late 19th century, Newport, Rhode Island, was a cauldron of money, excess, and unapologetic greed, where reputations were made and lost in a whirlwind of parties and fancied slights. But amid the glamour of yacht races, tennis matches, and costume balls raged undeclared class warfare, scandalous doings, even madness. In 1893, railroad mogul Sam Driver, one of the few surviving robber barons of the lawless years after the Civil War, knocks on the door of fabled Newport with his daughter, Jenny.

Terrific story from Jakes ruined by terrible narration

I stopped, listening to the story a few times. But I just wanted to see how it ended, but the narration was excruciating.

Historia
Winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for History. In this magisterial biography, T. J. Stiles paints a portrait of Custer both deeply personal and sweeping in scope, proving how much of Custer’s legacy has been ignored. He demolishes Custer’s historical caricature, revealing a volatile, contradictory, intense person - capable yet insecure, intelligent yet bigoted, passionate yet self-destructive, a romantic individualist at odds with the institution of the military (he was court-martialed twice in six years).

This is truly one of the best books I've listened to or read the old fashion way, in decades. There's just something about the narrator's perfect voice along with the incredible story I could not stop listening. I will carry the story and spirit of Colton in my heart for a long time. Highly recommended.

Historia
In the darkest days of the American Revolution, Francis Marion and his band of militia freedom fighters kept hope alive for the patriot cause during the critical British southern campaign. Like the Robin Hood of legend, Marion and his men attacked from secret hideaways before melting back into the forest or swamp. Employing insurgent tactics that became commonplace in later centuries, Marion and his brigade inflicted losses on the enemy that were individually small but cumulatively a large drain on British resources and morale.

I love the story it was a great book I really enjoyed learning all about Francis Marion. But I must say the timber of the narrators voice was annoying to listen to.
Was this done along time ago? Would be worth a reread by the narrator with a more pleasant voice

Love story. Terrible narration
Revisado: 09-28-21
Almost quit the book several times due to the terrible halted narration. It almost seemed like it was narrated by artificial intelligence kind of voice. Too bad

Historia
Millions of words have poured forth about man's trip to the moon, but until now few people have had a sense of the most engrossing side of the adventure: namely, what went on in the minds of the astronauts themselves - in space, on the moon, and even during certain odysseys on earth. It is this, the inner life of the astronauts, that Tom Wolfe describes with his almost uncanny empathetic powers that made The Right Stuff a classic.

It was excruciating to listen to this performance
Revisado: 02-02-19
Dennis Quaid slurred and awkwardly blundered alone as read this book. What a disappointment. I love him in movies obviously LOVE Tom Wolfe and this book, but they should have run a breathalyzer on Dennis before the
recording. He had cotton mouth or fat tongue every step of the way. I did not get that when I listen to the preview. I wish I could get my money back

Historia
From the immense staff running a lavish Edwardian estate and the lonely maid-of-all-work cooking in a cramped middle-class house to the poor child doing chores in a slightly less poor household, servants were essential to the British way of life. They were hired not only for their skills but also to demonstrate the social standing of their employers - even as they were required to tread softly and blend into the background. More than simply the laboring class serving the upper crust - as popular culture would have us believe - they were a diverse group that shaped and witnessed major changes in the modern home, family, and social order.
