A company of Army Rangers is sent on an interstellar colony ship to secure a foothold on a dangerous, alien planet through violence of action. Leaving behind a warring Earth flung headfirst into a conflict of mutual assured destruction, the Rangers and the accompanying crew of first colonists are guided on a 40-year journey by an unprecedented artificial intelligence. Great fun
Revisado: 01-17-22
Heaps of action, hugely predictable but with enough twists to keep you guessing, lots of humour, rah rah America. Thoroughly recommended entertaining read. And RC Bray of course - I agree with him, none better.

Very satisfying
Revisado: 01-04-22
At first I couldn’t see how the story arc was going to reach a conclusion to the series. But as I got carried along by the pacy, action filled story it gradually came together to a slightly unexpected but satisfying, sad, optimistic ending with great promise for mankind. I hope it all works out like this in real life.

Historia
Soon to be a major TV series starring Kenneth Branagh. On 21 June 1922, Count Alexander Rostov - recipient of the Order of Saint Andrew, member of the Jockey Club, Master of the Hunt - is escorted out of the Kremlin, across Red Square and through the elegant revolving doors of the Hotel Metropol. Deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the Count has been sentenced to house arrest indefinitely. But instead of his usual suite, he must now live in an attic room while Russia undergoes decades of tumultuous upheaval. Can a life without luxury be the richest of all?

An artfully woven story, beautifully narrated.
Revisado: 11-04-19
The story of a young aristocratic Russian gentleman who is arrested and tried for being an aristocrat and who is banished to a small room in the Attic of the hotel in which he has been living. We meet the staff and visitors to the hotel as he adapts to his new life and learn of the goings on in Russia as the country transitions to communism.
The Count is an honest, fair minded, ethical man who sees the good in people and he turns out to be the luckiest man in Russia.
Narrated in an aristocratic english voice that adds depth and colour to the story.
Lots of period details and nicely developed other characters.
Totally immersing.

Historia
It is now 100 years since drugs were first banned in the United States. On the eve of this centenary, journalist Johann Hari set off on an epic three-year, 30,000-mile journey into the war on drugs. What he found is that more and more people all over the world have begun to recognize three startling truths: Drugs are not what we think they are. Addiction is not what we think it is. And the drug war has very different motives to the ones we have seen on our TV screens for so long.

Very useful information
Revisado: 10-05-19
Finally, after reading this book, I feel that I have enough unbiased, factual, real world information to understand the reasons for the war against drugs and the reasons it needs to stop, and what options there are to manage drugs in the future. The author lays out the main motivations of drug usage both good and bad and why prosecution of the war against drugs can only make matters worse.
Thoroughly recommended reading.

A good yarn with potentially interesting sequels.
Revisado: 08-21-18
The story starts at pace with hints of science fiction. Then there are miles and miles of really good story telling that is very well narrated but with little or no science fiction in sight. The story ends with a fascinating (science fiction) premise for future development. I hope this story line has a future. Recommended.
