Repetitive things worth repeating
Revisado: 03-20-18
Marks had a lot of solid insight - nothing mind-blowing - but what he chooses to focus on as essential make a lot of sense and will highly impact how I invest. Other listeners complained of the repetitiveness, but unless I'm just a slow thinker, I needed that time and rephrasing to help me incorporate that into my mental model of investing. I would read it again in a couple years to make sure I stick to these fundamentals.

Historia
Goodwin describes the broken friendship between Teddy Roosevelt and his chosen successor, William Howard Taft. With the help of the "muckraking" press, Roosevelt had wielded the Bully Pulpit to challenge and triumph over abusive monopolies, political bosses, and corrupting money brokers. Roosevelt led a revolution that he bequeathed to Taft only to see it compromised as Taft surrendered to money men and big business. The rupture led Roosevelt to run against Taft for president, an ultimately futile race that gave power away to the Democrats.

Great, but not Team of Rivals
Revisado: 02-14-18
Great narrator, good story, just not as good as DKG's Team of Rivals. I didn't expect the stories of McClure's staff, which was beautifully woven in and interesting. there were a few set spots in the early middle and the story lacked any real suspense or conflict until the 1912 election. Still worth the read.

Insightful
Revisado: 07-10-16
it was very powerful to see inside Mr. Hunter's mind and experience his students through his eyes. As a teacher, I came in hoping for a "how to" guide, but found this more valuable. He conveys the types of experiences he is creating, giving me an end point to aim for. I would recommend it to any teacher trying to design meaningful new experiences for students.

Historia
The tsunami of cheap credit that rolled across the planet between 2002 and 2008 was more than a simple financial phenomenon: it was temptation, offering entire societies the chance to reveal aspects of their characters they could not normally afford to indulge. The Greeks wanted to turn their country into a pinata stuffed with cash and allow as many citizens as possible to take a whack at it. The Germans wanted to be even more German; the Irish wanted to stop being Irish.

Great but not his best
Revisado: 05-25-16
A lot of this book read more like a travel blog than a coherent story. However, Michael goes to places with interesting questions and is one hell of a blogger, so it is a great read.

I will listen to this at least once per year. For a no-shortcuts approach to life, I was amazed at how insightful it still was. Best book I have read in a while.

Informative and challenging
Revisado: 06-27-15
Douthat spares no church in discussing heresy in the modern church. He stands between political lines and denominational lines and rips apart a the accommodations made (and still being made) by churches who find relevancy to culture more important than orthodox faith. I'm a better informed Christian and observer of cultural patterns (modern and much older) because of listening.

Good but strayed from topic
Revisado: 05-10-15
The first half of the book was interesting to listen to as a coach. After a while, Calipari strayed into his own opinions about NCAA basketball and details on how it should work. I listened to the whole thing but didn't get much out of the second half.
