Historia
In Bush, Jean Edward Smith demonstrates that it was not Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, or Condoleezza Rice, but President Bush himself who took personal control of foreign policy. Bush drew on his deep religious conviction that important foreign-policy decisions were simply a matter of good versus evil. Domestically, he overreacted to 9/11 and endangered Americans' civil liberties.

Poor Narrator
Revisado: 07-20-22
I’ve read two other biographies by Jean Edward Smith and loved them. While I enjoyed this book, the narrator was terrible. Stop trying to sound like Bush. It is off putting.
Also learn how to pronounce names. Colin Powell pronounced his first name like colon. The narrator sometimes pronounced it correctly and sometimes didn’t.

Historia
If it’s navel-gazing you’re after, you’ve come to the wrong place; ditto treacly self-examination. Rather, his observations turn outward: a fight between two men on a bus, a fight between two men on the street, pedestrians being whacked over the head or gathering to watch as a man considers leaping to his death. There’s a dirty joke shared at a book signing, then a dirtier one told at a dinner party - lots of jokes here. Plenty of laughs.

The joy of a David Sedaris audiobook is Sedaris narrating the book. I sincerely hope he doesn’t try this experiment of Tracey Ullman or anyone else again.

Inconsistent
Revisado: 08-23-20
As long as you understand Jon Meacham did not write a balanced book, you won't become as frustrated as I did. The best part of the book is the great Edward Herrmann as narrator.
This book isn't supposed to be like Ron Chernow's Alexander Hamilton or David McCullough's John Adams. It is not as detailed, but I didn't expect a one-sided book. Hamilton and Adams did not come off as saints but rather human.
Meacham only seemed upset about Jefferson expanding the role of the federal government than his practice of slavery. Jefferson wrote against slavery while owning slaves and having children with a slave who was only 14.
Yes, I know slave owners often slept with their slaves. I know other founding fathers were slave owners. Jefferson did not hide his role as a slave owners as it was accepted in parts of the country. However, he did hide his relationship with Sally Hemings. Why? Because it was not accepted at the time.
If you're upset about the Louisiana Purchase, you should be appalled by Jefferson's actions with Hemings and their children.
Jefferson was a brilliant, curious, flawed man. I wish the book represented the entire man.
