Great book but the reading is very poor
Revisado: 12-10-20
This book is fantastic on many levels and I highly recommend it to anyone, however Scott Brick's reading has a lot to be desired. He reads this entire book, this entire series, in one voice, one deep slow melodious voice. Man, woman, child, computer, whatever, it's one voice. Ben Stein has more inflection than this guy ... Bueller? Bueller? Bueller? His 'style' of reading makes it a chore, not a treat to listen too.

The boring debate between fundamentalist believers and non-believers is finally moved on by Alain de Botton's inspiring new book, which boldly argues that the supernatural claims of religion are of course entirely false - and yet that religions still have important things to teach the secular world.

A lot of talking without saying too much
Revisado: 11-02-19
I've sat here listening to a little over half of this book and I'll be damned if I know where the 'guide' portion of this book is. This isn't a "Non believers guide to the use of religion". I'm stumped as to where he got that sub title. A more accurate sub title would be "An atheist prattles on and on about things that others have covered more eloquently elsewhere".
I still don't know what the point of this book. It's just endless complaining, pointing out of hypocrisies, and a bunch of I don't know what. I mean he talks and talks and doesn't come close to a point or maybe there's one big point at the end. Either way, I just can't listen anymore.

Humorous, surprising, and informative, Dr. Peterson tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street.

I really wanted to like this book, but I just cant
Revisado: 10-08-19
I've been listening to Dr. Peterson on YouTube for sometime now, and decided to get this book in hopes to hear his thoughts in a more complete setting, but sadly, I haven't been very impressed.
The 12 rules are fine, just like a litany of similar books, the premise is hard to refute. "Don't be such a jerk", "Take responsibility for yourself" and other such thoughts are perfectly fine. But for some stupid reason he keeps blathering on about christian and biblical myth and then tries, not very successfully, to relate it to the point he's been trying to make.
So much of this book is skip-able that I wonder if what is listenable is worth the time to hear. There are a ton of similar self help books here on Audible ("The Subtle are of no giving a fuck" is one that comes to mind), try those first, this books reliance on christian myth to (kinda) make points hurts the content and seriously brings doubt to the reader regarding the authors fitness to write what he's writing.
Nothing was more frustrating than listening intently to him set up a thought, frame it, tell a substantial story and then finally 'make' the point by dragging in some stupid myth shit from the fucking bible! FAST FORWARD FAST FORWARD FAST FORWARD FAST FORWARD .... Next chapter.
I think I'll buy a Daniel Dennett book next.

Painfully awful
Revisado: 05-04-18
I couldn't get through this book. His points are inane. I can't stress this enough, inane, inane, inane!! OMG inane!! He stresses two points, that Baby Boomers were raised to be individual selfish assholes (a point to which I'm sympathetic), and are now acting like a collective of grown up selfish assholes in an attempt to remain individual assholes. Not a hard gap to bridge but you'd be surprised just how complicated he makes his own argument so much so as to be unable to cross the gap, or even build something resembling a bridge.
His writing is dull and glittered with sesquipedalian words that serve no clarification, and appear to be there to show the reader that he knows some really esoteric sesquipedalian words.
I gave this two stars only because he does have a few original points that you can use for yourself and maybe add to your own POV. But all in all, don't bother!

Entertaining but ...
Revisado: 09-05-17
I'll try to keep this short but still informative.
I really like the plot and the story. The idea of being a body-less replicant capable of the things Bob and his prodigy can do has been, I admit, an active part of my free time imagination. However I find a couple of short comings, or at least a couple of things that I don't like.
The ability of a lesser mind (i.e. computer, robot, android, the undead, civil alien) to master modern quips, vernacular and the subtleties of sarcasm is a trope that's getting old (Christopher Moore) and is only trumped by the age of the second over used trope ...
The geek culture's irreverence of anything too serious that is manifested by a predictably 'geeky' naming convention. This has been done too often by others, John Scalzi, Ernest Cline seem to rely on the trope a lot too. It's just getting old to me.
My last criticism is that the story seemed to get too lopsided at one point. With all those 'Bob's' out there the chapters focus on two 'Bob's' for what seems to be tens of chapters. In the mean time I was dying for an up date from all these other characters that just never seem to come.
Other than those minor points I found this a fun story good enough that I bought book two!

Back on Earth with nothing more to show for his long, strange trip through time and space than a ratty towel and a plastic shopping bag, Arthur Dent is ready to believe that the past eight years were all just a figment of his stressed-out imagination. But a gift-wrapped fishbowl with a cryptic inscription, the mysterious disappearance of Earth’s dolphins, and the discovery of his battered copy of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy all conspire to give Arthur the sneaking suspicion that something otherworldly is indeed going on.

A great book ruined by the reader
Revisado: 12-30-15
Seriously, skip this version of this great book, the reader is just awful, he somehow manages to make Douglas Adams' story dull and boring and only brings a bit of humor when her goes over bored with the childish/cartoon like voices he does for some of the alien characters. The voice he uses for Agrajag is similar to the voice of the guy who flies Stan and Kyle to imaginationland from South Park.
I gave this two stars only because I can't give Douglas Adams one star.

The story is weak, the characters are dull and he got rid of the 'goggies'.

Revisado: 12-10-15
A friend recommended this book to me 20 years ago and I let that recommendation go in one ear and slip out of the other and that was my loss.
I loved this, it's laugh out loud funny, has great characters that you can relate to and who are textural. It's well written and grabs your attention. Pretty much everything you want from a book.
Do yourself a favor and, at the very least, get this on your 'must read' list!!

I found this a bit hard to listen to
Revisado: 09-30-14
I had a bit of a hard time listening to this book and I imagine it would have been better if I would have actually read it as opposed to listening to it. At one point in this fantastic tale comes a type of dream sequence and that sequence is a bit difficult to differentiate in contrast to the the fantastic tale.
Now of course this could have just been me. When I listen I tend to listen while doing something else like driving and I wouldn't be surprised that either another listen will help me enjoy this book more or a more attentive ear would have been better in the first place.
However, this is a VERY complicated plot so unless you can devote more attention to it than I was able, you might want to consider a Gaiman book that has a more simple plot.

"Oscar Wilde's Fairy Tales continue to exert the same pull over the imagination and emotions as they did when he first read them to his children in the 1880s. Revisado: 09-21-13
It's always special to listen to Stephen Fry read. It's extra special when he reads something that he himself loves and he loves Oscar Wilde.
This is a collection of very entertaining children stories. I'm not sure if we would consider these 'children stories' today but like Grimm's fairy tales they were at least intended to be for children when they were written.
