Historia
Can literature change our real world society? At its foundation, utopian and dystopian fiction asks a few seemingly simple questions aimed at doing just that. Who are we as a society? Who do we want to be? Who are we afraid we might become? When these questions are framed in the speculative versions of Heaven and Hell on earth, you won't find easy answers, but you will find tremendously insightful and often entertaining perspectives.

Historia
In a near future, the air pollution is so bad that everyone wears gas masks. The infant mortality rate is soaring, and birth defects, new diseases, and physical ailments of all kinds abound. The water is undrinkable - unless you're poor and have no choice. Large corporations fighting over profits from gas masks, drinking water, and clean food tower over an ineffectual, corrupt government.

Good World Building, not much story
Revisado: 04-06-22
I love this narrator!
I kept waiting for the story to start. The world was a very good description of a possible world in the not to far future. The characters were compelling and sympathetic, but there was no actual through-line of a story. bummer

Historia
These 31 stories are fiction. Short and scary. Delivered to you in small, terrifying bursts, much the way you’d experience each individual room in a haunted-house attraction. They were specifically written to be enjoyed by both the not-too-young and old alike. Inside, you’ll find horror, drama, even a few laughs - and zombies. Zombies by the ton. Gnawing, gnashing, stumbling, and staring... Right. At. You. Waiting…for a bite-sized offering.

The introduction killed it
Revisado: 02-18-22
The whole beginning is the editor going in about her kids and how grateful she is that the money from this book will pay for her kids medical care. Very gushy and "my poor brave angels that the world thinks are worthless" such a whiny, begging tone, I was put off by it.
She also mentioned that her kids names will appear as tribute to her kids. lovely thought, but more than their names were characterizations of the characters, which played to me like a sympathy grab by the authors. And the result is simplistic stories that are not good examples of the apocalyptic Zombie genre.
I'm sorry to crap on this woman's project, but EVERY book is published hoping that the author will be able to make rent with it.* Just because she has a legitimately harder and more bill-filled life doesn't make me want to buy her book. I wanted some good short stories and got syrupy pandering to her begging for money.
*Ok, yes there are authors who publish for the art more than the $, but I think it's more common that authors would like to be able to eat this week from selling their book.

Historia
In a glass-enclosed city of perfectly straight lines, ruled over by an all-powerful “Benefactor”, the citizens of the totalitarian society of OneState are regulated by spies and secret police; wear identical clothing; and are distinguished only by a number assigned to them at birth. That is, until D-503, a mathematician who dreams in numbers, makes a discovery: he has an individual soul. He can feel things. He can fall in love. And, in doing so, he begins to dangerously veer from the norms of his society, becoming embroiled in a plot to destroy OneState and liberate the city.

Definitely See the Connection to Brave New Word
Revisado: 02-18-22
Unfortunately, like that book, I liked it but about halfway through the momentum of the story just dropped and I couldn't finish it.
I'm sure I could have gotten through it for a class but not for a casual read.

Historia
We are being watched. That this statement no longer shocks is itself shocking. Post-Snowden, we know that the government - everywhere - has been reading our emails, listening to our phone calls, and watching whatever we do on the Internet. The only thing concealed is the nature of our watchers. In Watchlist, some of today's most prominent and promising fiction writers from around the globe respond to, reflect on, and mine for inspiration the surveillance culture in which we live.

An ok Collection
Revisado: 01-21-22
It's a collection of short stories, so some were more appealing to me than others. there are a few in the middle with NSFW sexual content (but I think that was in the description?)
I didn't care for one performer all the way through. He was ok, but the stories sounded somewhat the same in tone, when they really aren't. I think multiple voices alternating stories would have framed the individual works better.

Historia
In a not-so-distant future, a deadly pandemic has forced the world into social isolation. Confined to their homes, millions now survive off drone-delivered food packages and online-only interactions. It’s an especially lonely life for John Chambers, a drone shipment coordinator for the monolithic Chum Corporation. Trapped in his dead-end job and having just turned 40, John’s started spending more time grinding in virtual reality MMORPGs than he does grinding for his real-world job--and that hasn’t gone unnoticed by human resources!

I'm so mad the story stopped for the next book!
Revisado: 12-02-21
I need the next installment NOW! NO NO NO NO NO ! Don't tell me it hasn't been written/published/recorded yet!
No no no! if I write that I'm going to go all Annie Wilkes on him, it will probably be seen as a threat and it will be bad for me and distracting for him - so I'll tell you that I am making a movie reference to be funny like the characters. AND I need this book!
I hope you are vaccinated Mr. Author, wear your mask and stay socially distanced and WRITE THE NEXT BOOK! I need to level up!
I promise that this is all written with a smile, I LOVE this book!

Great Story, Didn't like the Narrator
Revisado: 11-02-21
I love you this author! I really enjoy his exploring different ideologies. It took me a bit to get where the intent of the story was going because I was distracted by the narrator. I really didn't care for his performance. But the story overcomes that. I hope the author gets a chance to have it performed by a different narrator.

I found the journal at work. Well, I don't know if you'd call it work, but that's where I found it. It's the lost journal of Nikola Tesla, one of the greatest inventors and visionaries ever. Before he died in 1943, he kept a notebook filled with spectacular claims and outrageous plans.
