Good story, believable, well narrated.
Revisado: 05-02-24
Don't know how this book sounds to a legal professional or law enforcement officer, but to someone with zero knowledge in these areas, the story sounded believable and well paced. Narrators are superb. They could make a phone book sound intriguing. I do not often write reviews or make recommendations, but definitely recommend this audio book.

Evelyn Gallagher doesn't care much about any of that. She just wants to keep her head down and manage the NSA's camera network and facial recognition program so she can afford private school for her deaf son, Dash.

Great audio book for commuters
Revisado: 08-05-22
Overall a gripping audio that I kept listening to even after my work day had started. As many other readers I struggled with graphic sex scenes. Other authors leave the mechanics of sex to the imagination of the reader, while illuminating emotional bond forming between characters that lead to what later understood to be a sexual encounter. The mechanics add nothing to the story other that extra cheesiness. There are some other questionable parts about main character easily winning all battles against apparently formidable opponents. But, that might be part of the fun. Cool to think of where technology can take the society. Those things are not that far in the future...

Fascinating to read this book as Russia is attacking Ukraine and Poland is emerging as the major player. I also didn't take American Space Force seriously until I've read this book. Definitely an eye opener.

Quite a fantastical story. Still fun.
Revisado: 02-16-22
The more hard working, highly trained special forces dudes were getting effortlessly dispatched by our heroes the less believable the story became. The incompetence is staggering and the ease of killing is worrisome, considering that those special forces guys are not the enemy, but upstanding citizens putting their lives at risk on the orders of their superiors. How many widows and orphans our heroes left in their wake? And to what end? With all those thoughts cast aside the book is still fun to listen to during morning commute or dog walks.

Yes, there are some very notable omissions in the book and some areas are whitewashed or glossed over. On the whole though, a very thorough look behind the curtain. A well written and expertly narrated story that often made me feel like I'm present in the room with the President. A must-read.

Boehner might be the last of his breed of decent thoughtful Republicans who cared about regular people and doing good things for the country. His narration is not always crispy clear, but the sense of humor is refreshing and the story is compelling.

Just ok
Revisado: 03-17-20
The author gets carried away by describing in great detail water conservation politics and peculiarities in 2035 California. The level of detail is quite unnecessary and gets boring as detracts from the overall pace and the flow of the story. Same thing goes about descriptions of the map and escape plans by naming each highway and the road that the heroes of the story will take on their journey. Why? I finally ended up looking at the map, and yes, all those roads are properly described and with this book you don't even need a GPS unit in your car if you are traveling from Mexico to US. But why so much detail? And lastly - the ability of 4 good guys defeat literally an army of hardened and well trained mercenaries and hordes of cartel soldiers is just mind boggling. I don't think I'll be reading any more books by this author.

Historia
In 2035, the southwestern United States is ravaged by drought, reeling from an environmental catastrophe that has left the landscape a chaotic, depleted ruin. California, still viably inhabitable due to its oppressive social controls, marshals state-of-the-art surveillance technology and totalitarian policies to preserve its fragile hold on rapidly dwindling resources and an increasingly unsettled population.

Starts slow, but picks up speed
Revisado: 02-14-20
Found it hard to put down (or stop listening) after I've gotten past the first half of the book. There are some hard to believe details, like why would a highly sophisticated voice controlled vehicle built in 2035 have a trunk release button? Or, why in the future people are still driving gasoline vehicles in the most resource conscious state of California. Overall though, these minor things do not detract from the overall story.

An ok book to listen to during commute.
Revisado: 01-16-20
hundreds of dead bodies of apparently totally inept "top notch mercenaries" who keep piling up as bad guys keep missing their target. Also, while bad guys are running corrupt structures, folks who execute their orders are all decent men, American citizens, former distinguished soldiers. Didn't feel like it was in good taste for the author to kill or badly injure so many of them with such glee. The narrator also did not make the book any favors. With that being said, I was intrigued by the action enough to make my commute seem to go faster.
