Historia
Sami Kierce, a young college grad backpacking in Spain with friends, wakes up one morning, covered in blood. There’s a knife in his hand. Beside him, the body of his girlfriend. Anna. Dead. He doesn’t know what happened. His screams drown out his thoughts—and then he runs. Twenty-two years later, Kierce, now a private investigator, is a new father who’s working off his debts by doing low level surveillance jobs and teaching wannabe sleuths at a night school in New York City. One evening, he recognizes a familiar face at the back of the classroom. Anna.

Best yet
Revisado: 03-28-25
I’ve read most if not all of Harlan Coben’s novels. This was the best yet of his stand alone novels. The ending does leave a sequel open as a possibility. Same level of humor as is normal, excellent dialogue but more plot twists than normal. Very enjoyable

First in series
Revisado: 09-10-24
I found this book after looking back through my library I previously had listened to the remainder of the Wyman Ford series but not this one, the first in the series. My main criticism is that I was unable to find an unabridged version. Now I plan to again listen to the remainder of the series; it’s been years since I’ve done so.

Historia
Late one evening, on a fog-shrouded suspension footbridge, Dakota Storm stares into the abyss below. The din of rushing water over boulders seventy-five feet below intensifies the pain he feels over the loss of his wife and toddler son. How simple would it be to step off the bridge and end his unrelenting grief? Through the clamor of his thoughts and a roaring stream, he recognizes the yelp of a wounded dog. With his original purpose for being on the bridge forgotten, he rushes toward the sound. He finds a trapped and starving border collie. Rescuing the canine becomes his focus.

I have lived the last 36 years in KC working for Kansas University on both the KC and Lawrence campuses. We’ve also maintained a lake home on Table Rock Lake south of Branson MO. The location of so much of this book as well as the Sean Krueger series is in my backyard. The characters all ring true to the locations and the plot twists maintain my interest while remaining easy to follow in an audiobook format. Finished 10 books so far and will continue to follow.

Engrossing and spiritual
Revisado: 07-25-24
My first novel by this author. Characters rich, plot complex yet easy to follow in audio format. What could have been a serial killer crime novel was a treatise on the many forks the road of life can take. Look forward to more of Whitaker’s work and to the day I’ve forgotten enough of this one to listen to it again.

Honesty and diligence
Revisado: 01-29-24
One of the best biographies I have read and I’ve read many. My father was from Kansas and served under Ike in WWII; he idolized him. This book fleshes out the real man and provides great detail about the course and events of his life. I’ll travel to the Eisenhower Library soon and probably return to the Truman Library. This book is not to be missed by anyone who enjoys biographies.

Historia
1992. All across the United States respectable, upstanding citizens are showing up dead. These deaths could be accidents, and they don’t appear to be connected—until a fatal fall from a high-floor window attracts some unexpected attention. That attention comes from the secretary of defense. All of a sudden he wants an interagency task force to investigate. And he wants Jack Reacher as the army’s representative. If Reacher gets a result, great. If not, he’s a convenient fall guy.

Improvement

I enjoyed this more than the last father/son effort. This read like the early Reacher novels. Scott Brick is one of my favorites and I think he’s probably the only narrator who can fill Dick Hill’s shoes. Nobody will ever say “Reacher said nothing “ quite like Dick Hiil. Definitely 5⭐️!

Historia
"Surely make you lose your mind . . ." So the Eagles warn us about the outrageous and ruthless lifestyle of the ambitious rock-n-roller. In fact, Don Henley could barely listen to the track "Life in the Fast Lane" when they were recording it. He was so high that it made him sick. The band that embodied the American dream with globe-straddling success, impossibly luxurious lives, and almost supernatural talent also descended into nightmare with betrayal, hate-filled hubris, the skeletons of perceived enemies, brutally discarded lovers and former band mates left unburied in the road behind them.

Welcome Overview
Revisado: 11-09-23
For those of us who grew up in the 50s -60s,
the music of the 70’s defined our young adulthood. We could pretend we were living the 70s rock life while going to college and grad school (medical school in my case) and live “life in the fast lane” the one night a week we could spare to let loose. This book reflects the true price our “Rock Gods” paid to entertain us and allow us brief vicarious images of what our lives might have been if we hadn’t put down our guitars to pursue our more earthly dreams. Great read!

Historia
Myron hasn't heard from Terese Collins in years. Not since their affair ended with no explanation. There had been no contact since, so her call catches him off guard. She's in Paris, she says, in trouble, and only Myron can help. She tells him a sad story she's never before revealed: a good marriage, her struggles to get pregnant, the happiest moment of her life when her only child was born, the day everything she'd ever loved was taken from her.

Changed narrator
Revisado: 10-16-23
Another excellent mystery. A bit more linear than some previous Bolitar novels but ending still a surprise. Preferred previous narrator but Steven Weber did a reasonable job. However, Esperanza lost her Latina accent, syntax and edge. Myron’s also lost his edge and his comedic timing; a bit like an Alan Alda character. I’ll still finish the series; I had all of them but this one in my library and listened to them originally as they were released.
