Historia
Artificial Intelligence is likely to greatly increase our aggregate wealth, but it will also upend our labor markets, reshuffle our social order, and strain our private and public institutions. Eventually it may alter how we see our place in the universe, as machines pursue goals independent of their creators and outperform us in domains previously believed to be the sole dominion of humans.

Crisp and enlightening with the proper dose of relevance to present circumstances. If nothing else, skip to last chapter for a poetic yet sober analysis of what AI may hold for us.

Historia
The Roman Republic was one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of civilization. After its founding in 509 BCE, the Romans refused to allow a single leader to seize control of the state and grab absolute power. The Roman commitment to cooperative government and peaceful transfers of power was unmatched in the history of the ancient world. But by the year 133 BCE, the republican system was unable to cope with the vast empire Rome now ruled.

Ah so!
Revisado: 01-26-18
Spot-on crisp storytelling with wry accents. You get a house -that-jack-built recount that gets past the cliche of what you thought you knew about Roman history. It never lingers too long while whisking you through the first five or so hundred years of the republic and you are left with a smug satisfaction from understanding how it really was.

Historia
From the preeminent Hitler biographer, a fascinating and original exploration of how the Third Reich was willing and able to fight to the bitter end of World War II. Countless books have been written about why Nazi Germany lost World War II, yet remarkably little attention has been paid to the equally vital question of how and why it was able to hold out as long as it did.

Answers many questions
Revisado: 01-04-18
Hitler was the match to the gasoline-soaked rag, andnd once lit, the fire takes on a life of its own. Some places where there is tiresome repetition but otherwise a thorough and enlightening cautionary tale about how something like this could happen.

Historia
In this fascinating and illuminating work, Leonard Mlodinow guides us through the critical eras and events in the development of science, all of which, he demonstrates, were propelled forward by humankind's collective struggle to know. From the birth of reasoning and culture to the formation of the studies of physics, chemistry, biology, and modern-day quantum physics, we come to see that much of our progress can be attributed to simple questions - why? how? - bravely asked.

Tiresome
Revisado: 08-05-15
The author is self-indulged and tries too hard to hard to be cute with modern pop references while constantly distracting the reader by injecting tiresome blurbs about his personal life. I was left wondering who the book was about. There is no new ground here but rather a rehash of what so many authors have done better. I made it to the fifth chapter before crying uncle.

Historia
The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isn't much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but he's content with his quiet and peaceful existence. That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve.
