Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Historia
Neko Case has long been revered as one of music’s most influential artists, whose authenticity, lyrical storytelling, and sly wit have endeared her to a legion of critics, musicians, and lifelong fans. In The Harder I Fight the More I Love You, Case brings her trademark candor and precision to a memoir that traces her evolution from an invisible girl “raised by two dogs and a space heater” in rural Washington state to her improbable emergence as an internationally acclaimed talent.

Horse Sister riding through sound waves
Revisado: 02-21-25
I’m so happy she created a family of friends, fellow travelers in music, and the natural world. That her horses are her teachers and brothers is beautiful. My sons and I share her love of cats and their singular medicine, they’re also funny as all get out. I can hear the stories of her life in the shimmering heatwaves of her voice and guitar and stories. That she sees the arc of history through women and horses is part of what makes her like no other. I had to go take a walk in the woods after listening to it.

Historia
Debbie Harry defined iconic band Blondie’s look. Chris Stein—her performing partner, lover, and lifelong friend—was its architect and defined its sound. “Parallel Lines”, their third album, catapulted to #1, sold 20 million copies, and launched singles like “Heart of Glass”, "Hangin' On the Telephone," and “One Way or Another”, providing the beat when Bianca Jagger and Halston danced at Studio 54 and the soundtrack to every 1970’s punk-soundtracked romance.

I loved All of it. The downtown NYC scene of the ‘70s and ‘80s, which I experienced myself and look back with great fondness. Chris and Debbie’s enduring friendship and all the stories starting with Chris’ childhood. My heart cracks for Chris and his lovely family in their unimaginable loss.

Historia
Chrissie Hynde, the songwriter and front woman of The Pretenders in its various incarnations, has for 35 years been one of the most admired and adored and imitated figures in rock. This long-awaited memoir tells her life story in full and utterly fascinating detail, from her all-American Ohio '50s childhood to her classic baby-boomer seduction by the rock of the '60s to her sojourn in the crucible of punk that was '70s London to her instant emergence with her band, The Pretenders, in 1980 into stardom as a frontwoman and songwriter.

Historia
What happened was this: Jenny Slate was a human mammal who sniffed the air every morning hoping to find another person to love who would love her, and in that period there was a deep dark loneliness that she had to face and befriend, and then we are pleased to report that she did fall in love, and in that period she was like chimes, or a flock of clean breaths, and her spine lying flat was the many-colored planks on the xylophone, but also she was rabid with fear of losing this love, because of past injury.

Revisado: 12-26-24
I know for sure and certain I’ll revisit this land of a fellow sister mother traveler, maybe in the wake of a sorrow yet to come or just a new moon or heck, when I miss hearing Jenny Slate talk. She reminds me to summon my familiars when I need company doing stuff around the house I’ve been putting off. They get to go on walks in the woods with me, they won’t mind.

Historia
A girl must watch her figure but never be vain. She must be intelligent but never a know-it-all. She must be ambitious, if she is clever, but not in a way that shows. She must cook and sew and make do and mend. She must know (but never say) that these skills are, in some fundamental way, flawed and frivolous—feminine. Girls must stay small, even as they grow. Women must show restraint. And yet. In books, in the landscape of imagination, a girl can run free.

Historia
The Flattery sisters were plunged prematurely into adulthood when their parents died in tragic circumstances. Now in their thirties—all single, all with PhDs—they are each attempting to do meaningful work in a rapidly foundering world. The four lead disparate, distanced lives, from classrooms in Connecticut to ritzy catering gigs in London’s Notting Hill, until one day their oldest sister, a geologist haunted by a terrible awareness of the earth’s future, abruptly vanishes from her work and home.

Historia
Known for his brilliant songwriting, his extraordinary guitar playing, and his haunting and lovely songs, Richard Thompson has garnered a longtime cult following and is considered one of the top 20 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone. Now, in his first memoir, he lyrically chronicles the start of his legendary career. Thompson packed more than a lifetime of experiences into his late teens and 20s. From the pivotal years of 1967 to 1975, he matured into a major musician, establishing the genre of British folk rock with the era-defining band Fairport Convention....

Time Machine Troubadour
Revisado: 08-11-24
I’ve listened to Richard Thompson since 1972 as a teenage dreamer wanting to transport myself back to the time of Arthur. Fairport Convention took me there. To hear about his life and the ‘60s and ‘70s British folk scene and all the musicians I’ve been fascinated by in his burnished copper kettle voice was a joy. I’ve long been bewitched by him and Sandy and Anne Briggs. That “Beeswing” came to be as a song from Sandy’s stories and his only seeing her sleeping form is Beautiful. There are so many little movies in my head that belong to his songs. 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, another that is so vivid. . I missed seeing him this year play in my own hometown. This give’s a salve to the heart.

Historia
It is 1873. Mrs. Eliza Touchet is the Scottish housekeeper—and cousin by marriage—of a once-famous novelist, now in decline, William Ainsworth, with whom she has lived for thirty years. Mrs. Touchet is a woman of many interests: literature, justice, abolitionism, class, her cousin, his wives, this life and the next. But she is also sceptical. She suspects her cousin of having no talent; his successful friend, Mr. Charles Dickens, of being a bully and a moralist; and England of being a land of facades, in which nothing is quite what it seems.

One for Sorrow Two for Joy
Revisado: 10-12-23
In the alternate universe of people recreated from history, I believe in all of them. I’m getting a bit choked up to have not met Mrs. Touchet and taken a walk with her. Of Mr. Bogle and his son Henry and his family, I would hope I could have been a friend to them as well, if they’d have me. I take in everything Zadie Smith writes whether a book in my hands or living in my ears for the days it takes to hear her stories. I’m always bewitched.
