I really love how Butler infuses superpowers, African history, African culture, American history in a way that is both sympathetic of the times. It never seemed likes she super imposes "modern" sensibilities on to her characters or storytelling.

Have you seen the movie "Fallen" with Denzel Washington? I swear they got that from Doro in Butler's Wild Seed. Fallen was released in 1998, while Wild Seed was published in 1980.

Butler doesn't give you clear cut villains. Doro, I guess the antagonist, is a complex character whose actions are driven more by survival and control than pure malevolence. Interesting that he was doing genetic engineering for thousands of years.

Protagonist, Anyanwu, for the most part, embodies everything Doro isn’t—nurturing, empathetic, and connected to life in a way he’s forgotten. Anyanwu’s power isn’t just physical—it’s her resilience, empathy, and deep-rooted connection to life that is her superpower.

Octavia Butler has this rare ability to make you feel like you’re not just reading a story—you’re experiencing it across time, space, and even within your own psyche. Her works aren't traditional sci-fi; it’s like she bends the genre to explore the essence of humanity through lenses of power, survival, and transformation.

Her characters are “time-unbounded”, existing beyond the page—eternal in their struggles and growth. Doro’s immortality, Anyanwu’s regenerative power, and even the generational consequences in the series—they all make you reflect on how time shapes identity, yet some aspects of the human condition remain constant.

How is it that Octava Butler, in 1993, could have prophesized the LA Fires of 2025? How could she prophesize the rise of wirelessly controlled electronic shackles? EVERY one of her books I have read (listened) too so far says she was, herself, a time traveler. The details with which she describes reality of 2025 is eerily uncanny. I only pray that nothing else from the book comes to fruition. But just in case, I am going to reread so I can get some of those tips on growing wild seeds and recipes for making acorn-based edibles.

This book was action packed, hard hitting, bad azz women! It was funny (British humor) and fun from start to finish.

There were emotional parts that were hard to endure, but that's life. Without those parts, the book would have been mere sophomoric, male-focused, sci-fi.

All of the characters are well-developed. Consider yourself on the level of Miri or Ben to see the things that might have been predictable. 🤔

Well executed! 😎🎉👏🏾

Probably one of the best time warp books I've read in while. in fact, I'm thinking this was the best. it presented plausible, to a layman, arguments about what's happening.
I would say the book was amazing but because of these two disappointments, I give it 8.5/10.
Two disappointments:
1. Spiritual views of death and weren't seriously looked at all. Islam definitely has a theory of time. check it out.
2. The narrator was so monotonous unless at 1.5x speed.

Don't let the 84 chapters fool you!
The first 32-35 chapters were fluff. each chapter/character repeated 80% - 90% of the content they said the last time they spoke. So frustrating!

Also, every speaking/named character, including Trouble dog were Debbie downers. I mean, 90% of the time they're lamenting a mistake! ugh so frustrating.

And... them to go and make the same dang mistake again! And Johnny Schultz... I think his character was incorrect. he was supposed to be a free-wheeling kind of guy. But most of the time he was was uptight.

There were many fun and intriguing points. But you could probably write those with 20 sentences!

Book 3 a slow starting, anti-God, erudite rubbish

Book 3 attacks anyone who is not "educated".
The author equates believing in God to being a neanderthal.

So... the first 2 books were ok. I first read them a couple of years ago. This last one, however, book 3, directly attacked God and the belief in God. "Belief in God" and some kind of standard set of virtues were made out to be the villain. And unfortunately, the author used hypocritical, extreme, misogynist as evidence for his trope.

## Spoiler ‼️###
.
.
.
.

The 3rd book didn't pick up steam until after chapter 9. When it did, the future was cultish. The threat of nuclear war was second only to the threat of a misogynist world.

The cultural "badlands" of the future was indeed weird. But it was so extreme in its sinfulness, that it didn't align with any religion's principles (for which the author tried to argue caused the deviance).

other points:
* The main character is a James Bondish type of scientist that gets chased by ladies on any timeline.

* The author portrays all normal women (non theoretical physicists) as airheads, even when they are literally rocket scientists. Nala & Chloe are horny cultural anomalies.

Whole series is great 👍 but each book has it's issues. the last one had too much cursing. This one the bickering between Joe and Skippy while trying to guess what the other was about to say just became too much.
but... I loved the Physics!

This book, keeps the witty humor up, but it's the first time I've had it playing on a road trip with the kiddos... and boy! eventually the gratuitous use fowl language was just too much. I had to turn it off. now, whenever they here RC Bray complain about his fowl language

Midesitt mixed philosophy, science fiction, and religion to create an enthralling drama from the point of view of a "demon".
