I listened to Ann Coulter, Bill Maher, and then Jon Stewart, et al, in that order, 2 weeks before the 2004 election. This "reading plan" was perfect for contrasting the three works: the intelligence level of the content decreased as the profanity increased.

Without the repetition of the F-word, "America (The Audiobook)" would last less than an hour. If the lies about Jefferson and Sally Hemmings (debunked in Coulter's "How to Talk to a Liberal") were removed, there would be 30 minutes of bad jokes, snide comments about Jesus as the only true judge, and references to Saturday morning cartoons.

The only positive was 5 minutes of accurate descriptions of talk show hosts.

This was a waste of my time and money.

Bill Maher is right when he reminds us that Bin Ladin and other Islamic terrorists are *Islamic* and that they are financed by the profits from oil produced by Islamic Middle East countries. The US seems to have forgotten the conservation movement of the '70's and we show little restraint in our National consumption of oil and gas. Why do we boycott French wine while demanding more and cheaper Middle East oil?

On the other hand, Mr. Maher indulges in hyperbole in his criticism of the Bush Administration. There are too many statements of opinion as fact, with little or no supporting evidence or examples and no references at all. Mr. Maher focuses exclusively on being negative and cynical, to the detriment of his logic, resulting in non-sequitors and tangential thinking.

He also has a couple of blind spots. He demonstrates a profound lack of understanding of the ethics of protecting human life as demonstrated by the belief that "assisted suicide" is a personal "choice" of "old" people. He should take a look at the evolution of euthanasia in contemporary Netherlands, where involuntary euthanasia by doctors is common practice, and it's now legal to kill children whose lives are deemed not worth living. Another blind spot concerns his comments about the "Holy Land." To many US citizens, Israel as the Holy Land has nothing to do with oil.

Maher fancies himself a libertarian, but he actually only objects to government regulation of sex, drugs, abortion, and "assisted suicide." It seems that everything else should be regulated and supported by laws and taxes in Maher's world view.

Entertaining history of the times

While this may not be the tape to listen to on an airplane (you will laugh out loud and/or find yourself muttering your own comments in response) or if you must soon spend time actually talking to liberals or wimpy conservatives (remember reading "Treason"? It's not cool to call real live aquaintainces "Girly Men" to their faces.), Ms. Coulter's book is an entertaining review of recent history and the political background and attitudes surrounding the events. I love documentation and supporting examples and this book is rich with both. (The definition of "is" is the common one in use, and the definition of "footnotes" vs. "end notes" is avoided by references within the body of the commentary. Can you imagine an audio book "footnote"? I can't.)

The book is a collection columns and relevant commentary about the columns from the last 10 years. As Ms. Coulter says, she's not ashamed of her columns, and doesn't feel any need to hide any of them, unlike some of the Left's former praises of Communist murderers.

Since Ms. Coulter is published by very few newspapers and journals, most of the content will be brand new even to fans like me who read Ann's columns on the Internet. There is no repetition or duplication from her other best-sellers books.

2000x Audiolibro Por Connie Willis arte de portada

Single story, but ...

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 07-24-04

Connie Willis is one of my favorite SF authors and this story is a prime example of her skill. ("Blued Moon" and "Bellweather" are highly recommended, too.) Willis looks at the world the way I do, but tells the story the way I only wish I could. Listen or read where you can laugh out loud.

"Even the Queen" has been voted "The Best Short Story Ever" by Science Fiction readers in 1993. Men as well as women - well, at least mature men - will appreciate the irony of the situation and the perspective of the characters. Note the contrast between the universality of the interaction of the people and their lives with the already-quaint descriptions of supposedly future technology. Who knew that the author's idea of a "mobile" phone and "signatures" of callers would be so outmoded, so quickly? On the other hand, she's right on the mark about the Palestine Homeland negotiations.

The cast is excellent, and the interaction and background laughter and conversational format is an improvement over reading the text. Voice only - as opposed to a video production - allows the individual imagination that I enjoy.

I was disappointed that only one story was included, but it's still worth the time to listen.

Good enough

The book is a discussion of McKibben's opinions of genetic manipulation of humans, the history of stem cell and cloning research and the possible outcomes. It is not a scientific work, but succeeds as a discussion in bioethics.
The book would be very useful for those who are unfamiliar with the subject and those who are only beginning to study bioethics. Some of the information seems too superficial for me, since I am a Family Physician studying for a Master's in Bioethics. I still learned new information and am definitely informed by the author's viewpoint.
I disagree with some of his pessimism about the reaction of the subjects of genetic manipulation since all children have struggled with identity and we've done fairly well so far. However, Dr Leon Kass and other more informed minds agree with McKibben. (I wonder how much of our differing opinions and optimism/pessimism are due to *our* genetics and how much due to that very struggle? How much is nature, how much nurture and the specific portion of our environment that includes these discussions?)
The actual reading is a little flat.

The author, Dr. Meileander is on the President's Bioethics Council chaired by Dr. Leon Kass.
Good overall "Primer," as the arguments are consistent and logical, with a thorough discussion of the major topics of debate in bioethics today, including reproductive technology, cloning, stem cells, euthanasia, and withdrawal or refusal of treatment. There are a few fine points I'd like to discuss with the author (the beginning of life, the morality of abortion in the case of rape and of certain end of life decisions), but he's got me thinking about my previous views and has given me at least one good phrase to counter calls for euthanasia ("End suffering, not sufferers"). He also helps me look at theology, as well as bioethics, in ways I hadn't before.
