Overall, The Passenger was not as impressive as some of McCarthy’s earlier works (Blood Meridian, The Border Trilogy), however interspersed throughout you will find some of the finest prose he has ever written.

My largest complaint are the chapters focused on the sister and her hallucinations. The dialogue falls totally flat, at best snarky and obtuse, at worst annoying and obfuscating.
Overall the dialogue throughout is the weakest part of the book in my view, I think Cormack has been reading too many plays or something. It’s clever, but like, too clever.
Really overuses this little speech pattern of statement X, statement Y
Question about X.
Witty Response about statement Y.

“They don’t don’t steal boats down there. They just steal everything else. It’s a point of humor for them”
“Not stealing boats?
“No. Not stealing everything else”

like haha, but stop.
That being said, I still really enjoyed it. When it hits it hits. Will definitely give the accompanying novella a go. We are truly lucky to have authors of his caliber still publishing at his age. Unquestionably one of the all time greats.

Hard Sci Fi at its best, on par with Mars Trilogy

Aurora takes the best aspects of KSRs other works and synthesizes them brilliantly into a gripping stand-alone novel.
Like his Mars trilogy, this work engages with a wide range of topics from A.I. to ecology to social dynamics to astrophysics.
This is not beach reading. If you aren’t interested in the technical aspects of science this may be a difficult listen. However, as someone who thoroughly enjoys such topics, this was mouth-wateringly delicious, hard sci fi at its best. Of particular interest were discussions of: Biosphere ecology, the challenges of terraforming, the halting problem in AI, the nature of consciousness, 3D printing, and explorations of human nature.
As a narrative it moves much faster than his Mars trilogy and avoids the sometimes exhausting political seminar aspects of those works. That being said the beginning was probably the slowest part. Stick with it! Once it picks up steam it doesn’t slow down until the last chapter.
The ending is particularly gripping and his descriptions of the different planets are sublime and could be easily characterized as space porn.

My only complaint in terms of the writing was a lack of likable human characters. However, like KSRs other works, this book is primarily about ideas and not a character driven endeavor. The characters mostly serve as mouthpieces for the various scientific and philosophical arguments being discussed, so ultimately the lack of strong human characters was not a problem. The character of “ship” (arguably the protagonist) was not only likable but also quite funny.

The narrator does a great job as “Ship” although I did find some of the voices of the human characters a bit annoying.

Overall: highly enjoyable, thought provoking, and kept me on the edge of my seat.

Hats of to KSR.

This book is amazing. The Body Problem wouldn't have been possible to write that long ago. Incredibly fresh and topical. Blends awesome concepts physics, conjures fantastical world's, simulates, stimulates, all while addressing pressing questions of authoritarianism industrialization, ecological destruction, and humanity's place within the cosmos.

Read. this. book!
