Historia
Dr. Robert Glover has dubbed the "Nice Guy Syndrome" trying too hard to please others while neglecting one's own needs, thus causing unhappiness and resentfulness. It's no wonder that unfulfilled Nice Guys lash out in frustration at their loved ones, claims Dr. Glover.

One-dimensional application of generic therapy
Revisado: 02-25-23
I'm glad that many men have been helped by this work. And if your psycho-emotional wounding exactly matches the author's experience, then you may benefit from it as well. It is a formulaic, cookie-cutter method for a very specific type of man. Nice Guy Syndrome is the result of A-B-C happening in your childhood, leading to you act out X-Y-Z as an adult; if you take steps 1-2-3, etc., then you too can become the author's rather narrow definition of a masculine man. He further tells you repeatedly that thinking you're different from other men is a falsehood that holds you back.
It's just not a very nuanced approach. It may help some men break free of a disempowering pattern, but it doesn't allow for more expansive self-examination. Additionally, the exercises prescribed are pretty generic questions that anyone on a personal growth journey should consider, regardless of what their sex or gender is, regardless of what their particular issues may be. That he tries to package them in a way that suggests they are for this specific population and "syndrome" feels gimmicky and victimy.

Valuable content, but for me, unlistenable.

I first encountered the author's work through an online summit and was further inspired to seek more of her offerings. While I enjoy her live interviews, in this narrative format her constant interrogative inflection was too much for me to follow. Of course we all uptalk at times, but when 80% of a speaker's declarative sentences sound like questions, I just tune out. It's a personal preference; when someone is sharing advice or information I need to hear them speak with conviction and assertiveness. I will be returning the audiobook and giving the Kindle version a try.
