From the locked archives of the Vatican to the overgrown jungles of Ethiopia, an unlikely trio begins a deadly search for the Holy Grail. Two journalists and a beautiful photographer are traveling together in a broken down Jeep while covering the 1975 Ethiopian civil war. Both men fall in love with the woman and that complicates things. When the trio winds up lost in the jungle, in the no man's land between the fighting factions, they take cover and dig in for the night. In their hiding place, they encounter a dying man who tells them an amazing and quite unbelievable story. But for some reason - one that they grapple with for the rest of their journey - that night they believe.

It felt like the sex was gratuitous and that it made the story line a bit desperate

Historia
Raised in the wilderness by her late great-uncle, Vida is a young woman with an almost preternatural affinity for nature, especially for the wolves that also call the forested mountains home. Formed by hard experience, by love and loss, and by the prophecies of a fortuneteller, Vida just wants peace. If only nearby Kettleton County didn’t cast such a dark shadow.

Historia
Voting is our most important right as Americans—“the right that protects all the others,” as Lyndon Johnson famously said when he signed the Voting Rights Act—but it’s also the one most violently contested throughout US history. Since the gutting of the act in the landmark Shelby County v. Holder case in 2013, many states have passed laws restricting the vote. After the 2020 election, President Trump’s effort to overturn the vote has evolved into a slow-motion coup, with many Republicans launching an all-out assault on our democracy.

Historia
In the twelve years following 9/11, American Airlines lost billions of dollars and endured years of crisis and turmoil. Financial upheaval, the crash of Flight 587, grueling confrontations with labor, a rival’s push to acquire the company, and a challenging fight with the government tested the mettle and fortitude of its top executives. Against all odds, American found a way to save what was once the world’s largest airline from certain ruin. Told through the eyes of American’s chief lawyer....

Interesting, but biased
Revisado: 06-30-18
This story gives one insight into the complex details in running an airline. It takes tremendous commitment, energy, and intelligence to address all the aspects and pieces that ultimately provide someone to fly from point A to point B.
There is no doubt that this period of time was a major challenge for the airline industry, however Mr. Kennedy tends to portray American Airlines as always being in the victim position. Labor gets portrayed as the ignorant adversary and management as wearing the white hats just trying to salvage the company. I find gaps in the story regarding what management could have done differently or what they might have considered, or correcting errors in judgement/decisions. I find management vs. labor to be a destructive, costly way of doing business. And why didn't you file bankruptcy earlier after 9/11 like the other airlines did in order to survive? It must have been humbling to end up surviving by having a much smaller airline come in to save the day.

Good but tedious at times
Revisado: 05-08-17
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I really am a fan of Dean Knootz and have read or listened to several of his novels. This was as always a very creative idea. It seemed to belabor the story in places and became repetitive when the point was already known. I prefer his stories that are tense and engaging without having to get too bizarre with the story about ⅞ of the way into it.
If you’ve listened to books by Dean Koontz before, how does this one compare?
Not as good as the other's I have read
What aspect of David Birney’s performance would you have changed?
The performance was fine, I had no issues with that as much as the story getting tedious or repetitive finding myself driving off.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
no
Any additional comments?
No writer can have a perfect book every time. When you read a lot of books by the same author one can almost feel when they must have struggled with certain parts. I think most authors really struggle with ending stories well and can be lazy about it or just get really bizarre with the story. This ending left me feeling like a lot questions were unanswered. Sometimes that is ok and the imagination of the reader gets to play with the possibilities, but this just left me with thinking "wait a minute Mr. Knootz, you have some explaining to do"

ok, but...
Revisado: 08-26-16
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I like my books to not feel like a chore. This felt like it more times than not. Seemed a bit predictable and all but the twist at the end were so so.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Surprised, but felt like the author was reaching

Did Down River inspire you to do anything?
Yes, to not feel compelled to finish a book just because I paid for it when I really don't like it.
