Historia
Sancia Grado is a thief, and a damn good one. And her latest target, a heavily guarded warehouse on Tevanne’s docks, is nothing her unique abilities can’t handle. But unbeknownst to her, Sancia’s been sent to steal an artifact of unimaginable power, an object that could revolutionize the magical technology known as scriving. The Merchant Houses who control this magic - the art of using coded commands to imbue everyday objects with sentience - have already used it to transform Tevanne into a vast, remorseless capitalist machine.

Girl, survivor takes on the violent, oppressive world and makes her place
Revisado: 10-17-23
This is a fair, action-packed novel with a young-adult genre air is set in a world where the rules of reality can be tweaked. Regardless of the cruelty festering within their country, friendship and love are accepted as they come. A tough girl with a traumatic history and a good sense of humor demonstrates how we can overcome our shackles and try to make the world a better place. Relationships and teamwork, ingenuity and education, as well as grit and dedication are the recipe for change. This book manages to touch on many human topics, including sensory processing differences, budding LGBT romance, unrequited love, betrayal, survivors guilt from war, and the traumas of slavery, power and patriarchy, lawlessness and domestic violence. The ending tidies up the story well while leaving it open for a sequel.
It may be bloody, but there are no rape scenes.
I may have appreciated this more in my teens and early twenties.

Very satisfied after having listened to the best book in the past year
Revisado: 02-28-23
This is not the typical wizard story, although there is plenty of magic, magical and immortal creatures, and heroism. I love the adorable innocent romance, reconciliation, and character building with personal growth and acceptance. This has fun world-building, uncluttered prose, and a very interesting plot and side stories with flashbacks and a couple different points of view.
The protagonist is a 20-year-old closeted gay hedgewitch from a dysfunctional family in the Oklahoma sticks. When his magical senses blossomed during high school, his determinedly normal elder brother had their mother institutionalize him, rending their relationship. He is curious about his abusive father who disappeared when he was a little boy, but the topic is taboo in his family. Therefore, is has been following the breadcrumbs of black magic objects that he hopes leads to his deadbeat dad. Then, his estranged brother calls pleading for help of the magical sort, and a rollercoaster of an adventure ensues.
The narrator does a very good job. It is very easy to tell the difference between different characters, and the accents and women’s voices don’t offend my senses. The audiobook is very good quality with only a handful of noticeable spots where the audio was spiced together.
I have been craving something like this since The Magicians finished on Netflix, and I am very glad to have found a new Audible series. Take a listen!

Revisado: 03-05-22
I thoroughly loved this book! This is my first intro to this author. The aliens are basically humans with a quirk to make them subtly different, which I guess is to make romance anatomically possible? Although there was little imagination there, the rest was a thoroughly pleasurable listen. It was cute, romantic, adventurous, funny, action-packed, and suspenseful with so many twists and turns! this was one of the best books I've listened to in a year. After only listening to have this book, I invested in purchasing 16 of her other audio books which were sale.

Action-packed cuming of age story with many twists
Revisado: 02-25-22
Interesting turn of phrase and vivid imagery.
Plentiful homosexual male sex scenes although they get a little repetitive by the end.
Low medical and modern physics literacy.
Narrator is excellent at differentiating the different characters' voices, but the "Southern American" does not sound quite right to this Southerner's ears.

I enjoy this narrator and seek out her work. This sci fi was interesting, creative and fun with different story line and plenty of action. I would probably enjoy more from this author. The writing is good but not flawless. The 'science' behind the medical portions is laughably flawed, but that's the way of science fiction; the writers can't all be physicians or scientists.
