It's just listen and repeat.

There's no accuracy. I couldn't see the words or their spellings. I wasn't retaining any of the information. I would mispronounce words because I had to guess at it just by hearing it repeated a couple of times and then wait until I could look up the spelling. Not very helpful as solely an audio book.

A romance novel with minor supernatural subplot

I'm not sure why I thought this would be supernatural suspense and not a romance novel, but I managed to disappoint myself. The romance was a little heavy-handed for my tastes, and it seemed like too often the romance took center stage instead of the plot. If you take out all of the romance from this book, the plot only occupies maybe 20%. I don't typically enjoy romance novels so I didn't really enjoy this.

The narration was confusing at times because, what I'm sure makes perfect sense visually, is confusing verbally. Several times the characters thought and spoke nearly simultaneously and I struggled to differentiate between the two.

Also, a pet peeve of mine; near the end of the book the main baddies stopped the whole plot to unload a f*ckton of exposition about the main characters, for the main characters. For what? Why? It seems like, if this information were to be meaningful, maybe the main characters should have acquired it on their own. It makes no sense for the main bad guy to spend so much time making sure they know everything about it.

It was an enjoyable enough read, until it got to the end and the story seemed to completely unravel.

Fistly, imo, there was an insane amount of exposition in the first half of the book that could have been hidden within the story or added to a preface as if it was the beginning of a storybook. It really slogged down the story for me and made it difficult to not tune out. And there was too little character development, but given what happened in the end that didn't actually matter anyway.

Second, there were whole sections of plot that started and were discarded behind the scenes by the characters, or were abruptly aborted moments after taking place within a scene.

Lastly, The final chapters read like an overly gory revenge fantasy and the turn came out of nowhere. The entire book seemed to be about being your own person, discovering who you truly are and rising from the ashes of the opinions of others. But the end negates the entire experience.

So many YA cliches and unnecessary information

I wasted my money. I am writing this without finishing because I am cannot finish it. I struggled to hear the story over the sound of my own indignation. There are so many YA novel cliches in this book that listening to it becomes painful and awkward. Every character gets both a first and a last name. NOT EVERY CHARACTER NEEDS A FIRST AND A LAST NAME! Are they integral to the story? Is their LAST NAME an integral part of the story? Leave it out! I have never introduced myself, or anyone else, with a first and last name, but it's happened about six times in the first two chapters.

Then! What really drew my ire, is that one of the lead characters began to complain in his internal monologue about the women folk (who get exactly one name) and how annoying and feminine they are. How they annoy him and his friend with their inane chatter. And when he spends PARAGRAPHS detailing for them his boring ass life story, he can't be bothered to listen to the woman's. The story literally says that her story bored him and he turned her out.

Since this isn't likely to be a story about him becoming a better person, I'm going to pass. I'm good, bro.
