Historia
Vienna, 1914. Lucius is a twenty-two-year-old medical student when World War I explodes across Europe. Enraptured by romantic tales of battlefield surgery, he enlists, expecting a position at a well-organized field hospital. But when he arrives, at a commandeered church tucked away high in a remote valley of the Carpathian Mountains, he finds a freezing outpost ravaged by typhus. The other doctors have fled, and only a single, mysterious nurse named Sister Margarete remains.

Historia
On a spring morning in 1932, young Karl and Mary Adare arrive by boxcar in Argus, North Dakota. After being orphaned in a most peculiar way, Mary seeks refuge in the butcher shop of their aunt and her husband, while Karl gets back on the train. So begins an exhilarating forty-year saga brimming with colorful, unforgettable characters: ordinary Mary, who will cause a miracle; seductive Karl, who lacks his sister's gift for survival; Sita, their lovely but disturbed cousin; and the half-Native American Celestine James, who will become Mary’s best friend.

I have never liked a story less.
Revisado: 06-24-24
I have read or listened to almost every one of Lousie Erdrich's novels and have enjoyed and/or been moved by all of them. They have have difficult but honest themes and characters, but they draw you in and open your heart and mind to different perspectives and ideas. They give you insights into humanity. There is not one character in this book who is not an awful human being. Some have small moments of doing decent things, but there is nothing to be gained or learned from reading this book. Even a newborn arrives full of darkness and all of the children are just horrible. I feel bad that this was my experience, but I hated this book.
I cannot phantom spending time creating all of these awful people who seem committed only to becoming more and more awful as the story goes on. None of them ever choose to learn, to grow, to do better, to try and have compassion or empathy let alone any redemption.
I will continue to read her new works, but I cannot recommend this one.

Historia
In May 1971, Pam Jackson and Sherri Miller were two seventeen-year-olds driving to an end-of-the-school-year party in a rundown Studebaker Lark, when they seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth. Police back then didn't do enough to try and find them. Investigators thirty years later did too much. Two families endure decades of pain as they await answers of what happened to their girls. When a third family is pulled into the mystery, they quickly learn their nightmare is just beginning.
