wrong choice for narration

The book starts with too much autobiography for my tastes. I understand the author feels this may be important in understanding what makes him "tick", but much of it is irrelevant.
But, my main complaint is with the narration: it's overly dramatic. The material is dramatic enough and doesn't need the sound of a tough guy detective to emboss it. The narrator is better off voicing Mickey Spillane novels or as the character Sam Spade.

He constantly observed the mechanics of nature. He dissected human bodies, carefully recording the workings of muscles and organs. He studied optics, sound and light, gravity, heliocentric celestial mechanics, physical geology, fluid dynamics, and especially the flight of birds.

What was most disappointing about Joseph Cottler’s story?
There are entire passages of fabricated dialogue. Don't give me what you THINK was said: just give me the facts.
How could the performance have been better?
A little less drama. He did the best he could considering the material.

perhaps, but here he sounds too much like he's doing a voice-over for an ad (and I am a former voice-over artist).
