Historia
Charles Dickens: A Life gives full measure to Dickens's heroic stature - his huge virtues both as a writer and as a human being - while observing his failings in both respects with an unblinking eye. Renowned literary biographer Claire Tomalin crafts a story worthy of Dickens's own pen, a comedy that turns to tragedy as the very qualities that made him great - his indomitable energy, boldness, imagination, and showmanship - finally destroyed him.

Perplexed by criticisms of author/narrator. I thought she was quite good. Last third of the novel, following discovery of Bunny, dragged quite a bit.

I love this book
Revisado: 08-15-24
I think I've listened to it more than any other book I've obtained from Audible (hundreds) or read. It is extraordinarily soothing and therapeutic. I often listen to it as I'm drifting off to sleep. It is a literary anti-depressant. Five stars++!

Historia
E. E. Cummings' radical experimentation with form, punctuation, spelling, and syntax resulted in his creation of a new, idiosyncratic means of poetic expression. And while there was critical disagreement about his work (Edmund Wilson called it "hideous", while Malcolm Cowley called him "unsurpassed in his field"), at the time of his death in 1962, at age 67, he was, after Robert Frost, the most widely read poet in the United States. Now, in this new biography, Susan Cheever traces the development of the poet and his work.

It’s not “cripple you”
Revisado: 01-09-22
When I first started going to Kripalu in the 1990s my sister joked that it should be pronounced “cripple you” - if you were new to yoga you’d feel crippled after a couple of days of yoga. Funny, but disturbing that the person reading this book didn’t inquire. It’s cri-PAL-oo Mr. Connolly. Crazy, man. That said, Cope is a wonderful writer and I recommend this book. Hey Steve- why didn’t you clue this guy in before he started reading? Geesh …

Loved This Book
Revisado: 12-20-20
I've been a fan of Watts since I bought "The Wisdom of Insecurity" at the Paperback Booksmith ("Dedicated to the fine art of browsing") in Coolidge Corner, Brookline in around in 1966. I thought this autobiography was wonderful. There is so much to appreciate that I bought the Kindle version after listening to the audiobook.
I particularly liked his description of his life in California in the 1960s. Watts was obviously a brilliant man, and he really shows off his skill with language and ideas in this book. The reader is excellent - you feel like you're listening to Watts read this book.
Highly recommend!

Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Enjoyed this book, but a warning ...
Revisado: 11-18-20
I listened to this after watching the Netflix adaptation, and although I enjoyed it, potential readers should be aware that the Netflix show follows the book almost to the letter. It's as if the book was the screenplay for the series. This is unusual - typically, at least in my experience, a book adds a great deal of depth to a movie adaptation. That's just not the case here, which makes the book a lot less interesting if you've watched the Netflix series

Really Enjoyed This Book
Revisado: 11-18-20
It's true that there is not much of a "story" here - this is more of a mood piece, and it is unusual in that respect. But, I really enjoyed it, and somehow it came off as an effective ghost story. Recommend.

Historia
“A faithful translation is rare; a translation which preserves intact the original text is very rare; a perfect translation of Montaigne appears impossible. Yet Donald Frame has realized this feat. One does not seem to be reading a translation, so smooth and easy is the style; at each moment, one seems to be listening to Montaigne himself - the freshness of his ideas, the unexpected choice of words. Frame has kept everything.” (Andre Maurois, The New York Times Book Review)

Struggling ...
Revisado: 06-03-20
I'm about half-way through this book. I was expecting much more than I'm getting. The book is written as if Manchester went to the library and grabbed every NYT, WAPO and Time Magazine from the decades he covers, and lists headlines from them. Headline after headline, but no analysis. It gets quite dull after 20 or 30 hours. Doubt I can finish it .....
