Leaves you wanting more, but in a good way
Revisado: 07-17-22
I am a huge fan of Farnsworth's The President's Vampire series. I put off getting this one mainly because of some reviews that suggested the ending made them wish they'd never read (listened to) the book. I try to avoid explicit spoilers, so I wasn't sure of the exact reason. Eventually I was so desperate for more Cade I went ahead and bought it anyway. If you're a fan of the series, I think you will enjoy this story probably as much as the others. Everyone has their favorite of the three, but it's not like this one is the weakest link. The end of this one definitely leaves you dying for more. If the next one was available I'd have bought it within 2 minutes of finishing this one. But it's been ten years since this one came out, and even though Farnsworth has said he hopes to continue the series at some point - and has released a couple very short novellas available, I believe, only in eBook form - I'm not terribly optimistic he's going to add a full length novel anytime soon, if ever. So the end of this one is kiiiiind of a cliff hanger, but this story stands on its own. It's not like some I've read that leave you hanging in terms of the story you have in your hand right now and feels like they just ended it mid-chapter, if that makes sense. Bottom line, I wish there was more, but I do not for a nanosecond regret listening to this one.

Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.

Good but felt vaguely incomplete
Revisado: 12-10-18
I debated between 4 or 5 stars overall. I really enjoyed the story, particularly the flashbacks that let you witness the beginning of the end as it were. But the actual ending caught me off guard and felt just a bit abrupt - almost like this was the 1st book in a series, where there's a sense of To Be Continued. It didn't ruin the book for me, although I hate being left with a feeling of "But...but...then what happens?!?" So 4 stars for leaving me frustrated by a story interesting enough to make me care.

Super Slow Start
Revisado: 05-31-18
Took me a long time to get into this one. First third of the story was painfully slow, but I suppose it was (mostly) necessary setup for the rest. Never really felt all that emotionally connected to the main character, but the narrator did a good job and made her more likeable than I think she'd have been if I was simply reading it myself. The final third was the audio equivalent a page turner leading up to an ending that was merely satisfactory. Seemed to leave the door open for a sequel, and I might be tempted to listen to that one too, although I'd hope they're was some tighter editing to even out the pacing a bit. So basically not my favorite audio book ever, but not even close to being my least favorite.

It had some really good moments, but overall felt too long and parts of it dragged for me. I just couldn't get emotionally invested in the characters.

Once again Michael Crichton gives us his trademark combination of page-turning suspense, cutting-edge technology, and extraordinary research. State of Fear is a superb blend of edge-of-your-seat suspense and thought provoking commentary on how information is manipulated in the modern world.

I HATE it when you can hear narrator swallowing
Revisado: 07-19-17
I've enjoyed many of Michael Crichton novels, but this was a struggle to get through, and honestly I fast-forwarded through many sections - including the last half of the last chapter which tells you something. At that point I really just wanted it to be over. Probably the biggest issue for me personally was that you could hear the narrator swallowing and making other "mouth noises" (if you're the sort of person who is annoyed by this you will know exactly what I mean). There were even times when I could hear his stomach gurgling and took off my head phones wondering if it was me. (It was not. Give the man some lunch and move his microphone back about 6 inches!) So that alone would have been enough to ruin this one for me, but beyond that the story was just not that riveting. If you can get past the narrator this might be a good book, but I don't think many would find it to be great. And it was enough to put George Wilson on my list of narrators to be avoided.

Good character-based mystery
Revisado: 10-02-16
I'm not much for mysteries generally just because I don't get into the "whodunit" aspect. The author can drop all the clues s/he wants but I'm not picking them up to try to figure out the ending ahead of time. The premise of this story sounded interesting enough to convince me to buy it, and it turned out to have some great characters to move things along which is mostly what it takes to keep me listening. Really nice balance of plot- and character-based storyline, good narration. If the description of the story interested you enough to be browsing the reviews, I'd say go for it. You probably won't be disappointed.

Historia
The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isn't much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but he's content with his quiet and peaceful existence. That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve.

Made a new Clines fan out of me!
Revisado: 09-26-16
Audio book equivalent of a page turner for me - loved the story, the characters, whole package. Initially the narrator was slightly annoying because while his male character voices were great, he does the same thing some other male narrators do and tries to sound "feminine" for the female characters, which I find to be distracting and annoying. I've had to quit listening to other audiobooks for that reason, but the story here was interesting enough that I was able to get past that after the first few chapters. I'm glad I did, because I enjoyed this story enough that my next 2 purchases were decided by getting back on Audible and searching for what else Peter Clines had written. I'd say if the plot synopsis interests you enough to be checking out reviews, you should definitely get this book. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Historia
For most people, the story of their lives is just that: the accumulation of time, encounters, and actions into a cohesive whole. But for an unfortunate few, that day-to-day existence is affected - perhaps infected is a better word - by memetic incursion: where fairy tale narratives become reality, often with disastrous results.

Just didn't do it for me
Revisado: 04-14-16
I liked the premise and expected to enjoy the story, but it just never came alive for me. I don't even know what to pin it on really. The narrator was good, in fact she's probably the only reason I kept listening. Some of the characters were interesting, but as a whole it just never sparked for me. I wish the whole book had been from Sloan's POV. Her sections were definitely my favorites.

Another great story ruined by poor narration
Revisado: 05-31-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
The book, yes, but not the audiobook. This is one of my favorite Nora Roberts stories, but I couldn't make it through the first two chapters of the audio version because the narration was so awful. Roberts may not win Nobel prizes for literature, but I think she's got a significant enough fan base that she deserves some of the better narrators that are out there.
What other book might you compare Three Fates to and why?
At the moment, I can't think of one that it reminded me of. Any fan of Nora Roberts knows there's a certain formula to her books and sometimes her stories simply remind you of other of her stories. For those of us who enjoy her style of writing, that's not necessarily a turn off, and it tends to be less noticeable (to me) in her longer works, like this one. Generally if you enjoy her novels, you'll probably really enjoy this one.
Would you be willing to try another one of Bernadette Quigley’s performances?
Never. In fact, if she were the narrator it would be enough to make me NOT buy an audio book I was otherwise interested in.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
If movies were always like the books that inspired them, then absolutely yes! But so many concessions have to be made to turn a novel into a movie - composite characters, deleted subplots, etc. - that if I really, really love a novel, it's usually better for me to avoid the movie version.
