Gold Rush in Peru

This novel is the result of a series of documentary articles in the Miami Herald. It showcases how gold mined in Peru ended up resulting in US based companies making billions of dollars but devastating the Amazon rainforest. Worse yet, it an easy way for drug traffickers to do money laundering .

Written like a legal thriller, this book highlights a story that affects everyone. A few years ago, there was a sudden increase in gold trading alongside a warning for the average person to avoid wearing gold. It seemed as if gold had become a great commodity again, a revival of past gold rushes and harkening to days of Incan empire. Unfortunately, the story doesn’t quite unfold with fictional pizazz. With better editing, this story which showcases how international companies can make profit at the expense of poorer nations and peoples could have had a greater impact. It often repeated the devastation of agriculture and mercury poisoning as a result of mining techniques and would double back on timelines. Having a key figure retire on February 30 is eye raising error. But at least it offers some resolution in terms of changes that everyone could implement.

This is the interweaving of slave narratives. The look at the legacy that remains in the South of North America where some are afraid to acknowledge the past, those who fight but get weary and those who perpetuate its cycle. The main setting is an old plantation house whispered to be haunted by its past. But now it’s being transformed as wedding venue/ local attraction.

Latanya McQueen uses the format of ghost story moves it from the usual trauma writing to what it truly is - a reckoning of the past. It’s haunting atmospheric emotional and in the end liberating.

The Lost World of Genesis One Audiolibro Por John H. Walton arte de portada

The content of the argument proposed by John Walton will not be unfamiliar if one listens to the Bible Project. This argument looks at the understanding of Genesis chapter 1 from ancient viewpoint. Due to translation and cultural limitations, this text has been used as fodder for material origin, hence the fight between evolution, creationists and neo Darwinism. Instead, Walton puts forward a functional theory of Genesis where purpose is key. He does offer distinctions between other religions of that day but stresses that borrowing from pagan beliefs is not the basis for scripture. There may be common elements but the revelation is quite distinct.

Like any academic paper, there is discussion on opposing theories. Walton acknowledges the difficulty with accepting this new theory but graciously encourages readers to strengthen their theology even if they reject his understanding.

For some readers, his latter comments will be quite controversial in terms of the teaching of science and leaving theology out of the classroom.

This is a nostalgic listen to a western that mixes redemption, American dream myth with a coming of age setting. Set in 1899 Wyoming, a young boy encounters a stranger who will spend months on farm and impact his family and small town.

By today’s standards it is engaging, nuanced for less than 200 pages. But it does exhibit that prejudice against Native American, the Sioux. Still worth the listen.

I know that often hyped books fail spectacularly. But this here- I’m still reeling from everything especially the last few chapters.
How does a debut novel of what is initially full of tropes end up making you wonder what just happened. For all the right reasons. The beginning is predictable but then twists on top of twists. The writing improved as the story developed. And it is hard to keep all levels of readers engaged without info dumps. But James Islington managed that well.
There were some tropes I’m not a fan of - resurrection trope- but it works here to an extent.
And now I’m torn between sitting a bit with this story or just finishing the series. Cause I be needing answers.

Firstly, the performance by Tanis Parenteau is stellar in bringing this story alive. I couldn’t put this down for too long. And having such a compelling story helps. This novel is what I have been longing for from an indigenous culture. It blends both mythology and contemporary themes using the urban fantasy framework. Whilst it doesn’t break new ground, it definitely provides a view that has been ignored for too long. Heavy on the trauma towards women, we meet Maggie Hoskins who is hired to rescue a young girl abducted by a monster. A hauntingly real story for indigenous women- read any other story and see how this is a constant refrain. But the story then opens up into much more. It is sad, riveting yet hopeful towards the end.

The main weakness is with the world building and writing style. . I love some good world building and here it is quite scanty. And
there is meant to be a major twist near the end that is not shocking. I’m putting this down to debut pitfalls of heavy foreshadowing with passive character who is spoon fed every clue. But I consider these minor issues against the rest of the story.

Now I’m annoyed at myself on two fronts. One, not reading this sooner. Two, not having the sequel which was recently on sale.

Pushing Ice is beautifully narrated by John Lee. This story follows the crew of the Rockhopper. This nuclear powered ship usually mines comets. In the midst of this latest work, two major issues arise. A crew member is terminally ill and Janus, the moon around Saturn leaves its orbit.

The mixture of hard science in this space opera was well crafted. I wished I had read this author years ago. It tackles political rivalry, alien contact and dumb object trope. Just be prepared for jumps in time continuity. But you will never guess many of the twists and turns.

This military fantasy continues the story of Paks as a veteran soldier. Despite being a Mary Sue character, Paks doesn’t have it easy. She has to mature and make her own decisions. And the author is willing to throw her character into harsh situations. You know she will survive but it still has the appropriate tension to keep the reader interested. Plus this second book actually advanced the plot I liked it more than the first installment.

Regardless of your views on the author, this biography seeks to showcase the difficult decision made by a young Lutheran pastor during the Second World War. The author attempts to show the nuances of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He is either a dangerous theologian or a complex man who followed his own convictions. It is not an easy listen as it can be dry in certain parts. But I don’t believe it glorified Bonhoeffer either. I am challenged to do more research about Bonhoeffer. And I think that this is a measure of success in any biography, whether this was the intent of the author or not.
