Historia
“Can I kiss you?” It was two months before the world premiere of Juno, and Elliot Page was in his first ever queer bar. The hot summer air hung heavy around him as he looked at her. And then it happened. In front of everyone. A previously unfathomable experience. Here he was on the precipice of discovering himself as a queer person, as a trans person. Getting closer to his desires, his dreams, himself, without the repression he’d carried for so long. But for Elliot, two steps forward had always come with one step back.

Thank You!!! ♥️🏳️⚧️♥️
Revisado: 06-18-23
Elliot articulates his life with neuanced and humble clarity. Naming the cacophony of shame that surrounds a journey of gender and sexuality, he shines a light on places that feel so lonely and undescribable especially in a world that is constantly telling queer and trans folks that they are the ones who are mistaken. The culture of demeaning and negating another's experience of the world continues to play out even in these book review comments. It is everywhere. This book identifies the harm inflicted by flippant homophobic and transphobic norms. It also shows what is possible- a way out of the pain, dissociation, and loneliness. I believe this book will transform culture, and will definitely save lives. Thank you Elliott. As a non-binary person myself your story helped me put words to some of my own unnameable experiences and has given me hope that I will find those that understand.

Historia
What would it be like to live in a well-rested world? Far too many of us have claimed productivity as the cornerstone of success. Brainwashed by capitalism, we subject our bodies and minds to work at an unrealistic, damaging, and machine‑level pace—feeding into the same engine that enslaved millions into brutal labor for its own relentless benefit. In Rest Is Resistance, Tricia Hersey, aka the Nap Bishop, casts an illuminating light on our troubled relationship with rest and how to imagine and dream our way to a future where rest is exalted.

I've listened to this while doing things and it has helped me slow down and take in on a deep level what she is saying. it's helped me stop when I needed to stop. it's helped me identify when I am doing too much. REST IS RESISTANCE!
found her through "We can do hard things" podcast on Oct 12, 22 called "No More Grind" great introduction to this book.

Historia
Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. His mother, Margaret, a Chinese American poet, left without a trace when he was nine years old. He doesn’t know what happened to her—only that her books have been banned—and he resents that she cared more about her work than about him.

captivating. relevant. beautiful.
Revisado: 10-23-22
so many metaphors so close to the things the US and other countries have gone through in the last few years of COVID with social anxieties, isolation, and fear of others... Asian discrimination.. black discrimination. bystanders who do nothing, or make everything worst by being the "good guy" by calling the police, by looking away, by being "polite" when they are just contributing to a system of harm.
Yet the book is also otherworldly. The first half from the perspective of the young boy looking for his mother, and remembering her through the fairytales that she told him. The trust and bravery that comes from the belief that everything has a meaning, a journey, trials to overcome, and that he can be the hero of this story -encountering tests, and staying true to himself.
such hope. such sorrow. librarians as holders of resources and resistance. Gorilla protest art- enticing the world to stop for a moment, to stop the business, the urgency of grind culture - to notice and to care.

Historia
In this unflinchingly honest documentary and memoir, comedian Josh Thomas asks the big question: how do I be gay? Irreverent but informative, Josh Thomas speaks to a party of hilarious and experienced queer storytellers as they share true tales and advice on how to be gay. When I was a teenager trying to work out how to be gay I would ask google impossible questions. 'Am I gay?' 'How can I test if I’m gay?' 'If I’m gay do I have to do anal?' It didn’t work....

Historia
If you’re struggling to stay on top of your to-do list, you probably have a good reason: anxiety, fatigue, depression, ADHD, or lack of support. For therapist KC Davis, the birth of her second child triggered a stress-mess cycle. The more behind she felt, the less motivated she was to start. She didn’t fold a single piece of laundry for seven months. One life-changing realization restored her sanity—and the functionality of her home: You don’t work for your home; your home works for you.

Historia
Jeremy Ivester is a transgender man. Thirty years ago, his parents welcomed him into the world as what they thought was their daughter. As a child, he preferred the toys and games our society views as masculine. He kept his hair short and wore boys’ clothing. They called him a tomboy. That’s what he called himself. By high school, when he showed no interest in flirting, his parents thought he might be lesbian. At 20, he wondered if he was asexual. At 23, he surgically removed his breasts.

Revisado: 01-12-22
I absolutely loved everything about this audiobook. I loved that each person in the family read their section. I loved hearing their voices. I loved hearing the different perspectives on the same events. This book is about now, right now. Thank you for making this story visible, opening up the conversation. I've never cried so much when reading a book. There was so much joy in hearing someone else verbalize experiences that I relate to and had never put into words. there are also differences in our experiences and identities but hearing this story told without shame opened me up to exploring my own story.

LOVED this book!!!!!!
Revisado: 07-17-21
Instead of giving one solution, she helped me think about how to problem solve my own life. The ideas and examples that she's gives are helpful and inspiring, and the way she frames them have helped me to be able to transfer pieces that would work for me, and let go of things that wouldn't. Loved the narrator too!

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Historia
I almost didn't publish Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends on It. I was terrified. Here I was, a CEO who'd fallen apart after his company failed, writing a book about how loving himself saved him. I thought I'd be a laughing stock and my career would be finished. But I stepped through the fears and shared my truth with the world. What happened next changed my life. The book went viral. Amazing people all over shared it online and on social media. They bought copies for friends and family. They wrote heartfelt reviews. For some, this book literally saved their lives.

Revisado: 06-16-19
He didn’t seem to have anything important to say. Seemed like he was trying to build something up, but there was never any meat to it. I only got 20 mins into it but was bored. Sounds like the writing process was important to him and I respect his personal process but that’s what the book felt like - a personal process.
