This may be my favorite in this series, which really requires you to read the whole thing, not great as a stand alone. Funny and well paced with enough mystery and drama to keep your interest piqued. I absolutely love the found family being created here. A bit of sex so not exactly a cozy but pretty close. The narration is very good, though you do have to be a fan of Joel Leslie who has a very specific voice.

I should like this author but I don’t. And now, 8 chapters into his “cozy” the probable love interest is in a relationship with someone else. Nope. I’m out. Either it’s going to be one of his read 5 books before you get any romance in your romance books or there will be cheating. Nope. Dnf.

Good writing with a cute low spice story. I like the universe and there are lots of fun characters. I wish the narrators did a better job on separating voices and used less of the weird drawn out nasally voices.

Well written, interesting fantasy with good world building and a lovely romance. Strong work from both narrators. My first time with this author and I’m excited for the next title.

I just live these. A perfect cozy with no on screen sex, a reasonable and moderately complex mystery and engaging well developed characters. Meanwhile, the narration is perfectly on point. His accents are really good, definitely hitting a little bit of an old noir film sound but it works perfectly in a series that is a clear homage to various genres of mystery. Love it. Best if read in order.

I love this author and I think the characters in this series are good. The narration of the male, English first characters is great, the female characters are rough and the Spanish accents are a crime. Now for the story line: first the story is just getting too tangled to the point of being too unbelievable for a book that is otherwise firmly rooted in reality. And the gay male characters act in sexually harassing ways at work which if it was a male to female would NOT be ok, so also not ok with male to male. Finally, Doyle is just too perfect. He is becoming less and less realistic as a human as the series progresses. Lots to love about the story and characters, excellent research on NYC and tons of amusing exchanges. But let’s stop with the tropes of brilliant cops that don’t get backup when it’s stupid not to get backup and people getting hit on the head and being unconscious for more than 5 minutes without it causing brain damage. Please.

A good story as expected from KJ Charles, but seriously, the narrator sounds like a broken robot. I can’t even begin to discuss the “American” accent. Yikes. Honestly I wonder if the author had a lot of say in narrator choice because when she was independent her narrators were always fabulous. Hope this isn’t a sign of the future.

First, this is a great story. However, the quality of the audio is awful. Sounds like it was recorded in a tin can. Then the narrator. Slow, monotone, far too modern sounding for the content, weird pauses and simply can’t enunciate long words properly which actually matters when the MC speaks 13 languages! Franky, the entire country of Ireland should be offended by his attempt at an Irish dialect. This story really deserved better.

A really fun cozy series (but with bullying triggers, be warned). I didn’t love the resolution of the bullying recovery in the first book, but it’s becoming increasingly clear the MCs are each very insular young men struggling to connect in the world. I don’t know how I’ve missed reading this series but I’m definitely enjoying it. The narration is top notch, as well.

First, the narration is not terrible but it’s kind of robotic and the accents jump all over the place.
Second, nowhere in the blurb does it mention that porn and sex work are a major focus of the story, which is a trigger for some people including me.
Third, it’s just not believable. The anti police bias in a story with a major cop character doesn’t work for me, and the treatment of the mc by the police makes even less sense given his brother is a cop in that precinct.
Finally, I don’t know the race of the writer but it’s written like a white person writing nonwhite characters without a sensitivity reader. It feels kinda ick.
