Historia
On the day she went silent, Speth never meant for anyone to follow her lead - or to start a rebellion of Silents. But after taking down the tyrant Silas Rog and freeing the city from his grasp, everyone is looking to Speth for answers she doesn’t have. All she wants is to find her parents, who are shackled to a lifetime of servitude in exchange for a debt they can never repay. But how can Speth leave her friends to fend for themselves when she’s the reason their city is in chaos?

A necessary and powerful follow up
Revisado: 04-29-25
This book was even better than the first. The first one was important because it does lay the groundwork and introduce all the major players. So much of this two book series is so frightening and also believable, especially in this modern world. I so want to have a book club talk about all the technological possibilities that are created as a means of societal control. It sent shivers through me on more than one occasion.

Historia
On a flight from London to Boston, Ted Severson meets the stunning and mysterious Lily Kintner. Sharing one too many martinis, the strangers begin to play a game of truth, revealing intimate details about themselves. Ted talks about his marriage that’s going stale and his wife, Miranda, who he’s sure is cheating on him. Ted and his wife were a mismatch from the start - he the rich businessman, she the artistic free spirit - a contrast that once inflamed their passion but has now become a cliché. But their game turns a little darker when Ted jokes that he could kill Miranda....

O.M.G. Twisty cliffhanger
Revisado: 04-05-25
Not once, not twice, but three groan out loud surprises. Great characters- though, do THAT many people actually decide that killing someone is their best solution? What a rat’s nest.
HAVE to begin the follow-up right now, as I head home. Let’s see if Lily can slither away, or if the detectives are good enough to catch her.

Historia
Before the nightmares began, Yeong-hye and her husband lived an ordinary, controlled life. But the dreams—invasive images of blood and brutality—torture her, driving Yeong-hye to purge her mind and renounce eating meat altogether. It’s a small act of independence, but it interrupts her marriage and sets into motion an increasingly grotesque chain of events at home. As her husband, her brother-in-law, and sister each fight to reassert their control, Yeong-hye obsessively defends the choice that’s become sacred to her.

This is one of the oddest books
Revisado: 03-31-25
I read this when it first came out. I had such an odd reaction to it. I absolutely could not figure out who I could recommend it to. But also, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It stayed in my head, it bothered me, but I didn’t hate it. It helped to listen to it. This time I still feel similar, though I have recommended it to folks. Always my recommendation starts with, I once had a glass of wine that tasted like leather. I can’t say that I liked it. But I also can’t say that I hated it. I kept drinking it all the way to the end, it was something I couldn’t stop. That’s how I still feel about this book…

What a gathering of damaged people.
Revisado: 03-27-25
Nearly everyone in this novel is a mess in one way or another, from creepy to asshole to fragile. Even so, I’ve yet to be disappointed by a Peter Swanson novel. Though there was some predictability, it wasn’t detrimental, and there were plenty of twists that I didn’t expect. I’m working my way through all of his novels, and this one makes me want to start whichever one is next up in my library.

Historia
Before the Arrest, Sandy Duplessis had a reasonably good life as a screenwriter in L.A. An old college friend, the charismatic and malicious Peter Todbaum, had become one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. Now, post-Arrest, nothing is what it was. Sandy, who calls himself Journeyman, has landed in rural Maine. There he assists the butcher and delivers the food grown by his sister, Maddy, at her farm. But then Todbaum shows up in an extraordinary vehicle: a retrofitted tunnel-digger powered by a nuclear reactor. Can it be that Todbaum wants to produce one more extravaganza?

How to describe a Lethem novel?
Revisado: 03-21-25
Another Lethem novel to wrap around your brain. He doesn’t hurry, he doesn’t waste words either. An “End of the World” with all the characters that are sure to be there. Those you love and those you hate. A book to hear again after it has had time to percolate and settle in your brain.

Not quite what I had expected
Revisado: 02-26-25
Good performance and the story takes you on a journey, for sure. Many flawed characters and redemption comes slowly or not at all, much like real life.

Meet Augustus Berrycloth-Young—fop, flaneur, and Englishman abroad—as he chronicles the Jazz Age from his perch atop the city that never sleeps. That is, until his old friend Thomas Nightingale arrives, pursuing a rather mysterious affair concerning an old saxophone—which will take Gussie from his warm bed, to the cold shores of Long Island, and down to the jazz clubs where music, magic, and madness haunt the shadows . . .

Historia
Years ago, bookseller and mystery aficionado Malcolm Kershaw compiled a list of the genre’s most unsolvable murders, those that are almost impossible to crack - which he titled "Eight Perfect Murders". But no one is more surprised than Mal, now the owner of the Old Devils Bookstore in Boston, when an FBI agent comes knocking on his door one snowy day in February. She’s looking for information about a series of unsolved murders that look eerily similar to the killings on Mal’s old list. And the FBI agent isn’t the only one interested in this bookseller.

Revisado: 02-08-25
This book was so much fun. I am just coming to Peter Swanson. Picked up his tiny Christmas mystery on a whim, then found this one. This book is so twisty and turn-y and unexpected. And now, I have a whole long list of new (old) books I want to read (spoilers be damned) in addition to more Peter Swanson.

Historia
Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv, the orc barbarian, cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen. However, her dreams of a fresh start filling mugs instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners, and a different kind of resolve.

Easy, engaging, exactly what I needed
Revisado: 01-19-25
Sampled and vetoed two books I thought I’d love, but wasn’t, before taking up this recommendation. Hallelujah! Hooked by the narrator, by the characters, by the story from the first chapter. Listened twice in succession. An orc run coffee shop is what I’d love in my life right now. And there’s a prequel! That’s up next.

Historia
Viv's career with the notorious mercenary company Rackam's Ravens isn't going as planned. Wounded during the hunt for a powerful necromancer, she's packed off against her will to recuperate in the sleepy beach town of Murk—so far from the action that she worries she'll never be able to return to it. What's a thwarted soldier of fortune to do? Spending her hours at a beleaguered bookshop in the company of its foul-mouthed proprietor is the last thing Viv would have predicted, but it may be both exactly what she needs and the seed of changes she couldn't possibly imagine.

I am hoping there are more stories to be written into this series. Give me stories about friendship and love and following your path up and then down. Give me those stories with orcs and dwarfs and a homunculus for good measure. Keep writing and narrating, please, Mr. Baldree.
