These stories did not disappoint. Fun to hear the beginnings of her successful career. That they were short stories made them an enjoyable variety in small bites.

Fun futuristic tale

I really liked this story. It kept my attention with a fun premise and an intriguing and coherent storyline. A mystery of sorts with no blood and guts and well-written set in a future of different colonies on different planets. The protagonist, who is an accomplished thief (allegedly), is given a lethal illness while on a mission and must find a cure in a round-about way. Not giving anything away here. Just give it a listen. There was an “f” word but not THE “f” word which was really refreshing as it can be used as a distracting ploy to hide bad writing. Would really like more of this! Highly recommend to anyone looking for a few hours well-spent with a good story.

Such fun

These mysteries are truly “cozy.” Enough mystery to keep interest and enough action to keep things moving. Have really loved seeing the development of the characters over the series. Will certainly keep listening. Keep them coming, please!

Excellent forerunners

These stories capture the flowering of science fiction writing from the favorite authors of my childhood. Such an marvelous study in imagination and writing excellence. It’s a wonderful testament to their ability to be relevant today despite small anachronisms showing the technology of the times. Makes me want to go back and re-read my favorites - by Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke and Silverberg, too. So worth the listen more than once!

Great Performance

So many times I have read or listened to this book that I cannot count. In listening to this version by Rosamund Pike, I caught different pieces of information and nuances I had previously missed. They were just a bonus on top of a highly-enjoyable reading. Thank you for breathing new life into such a well-loved favorite.

Definitely not my cup of tea

I listened to three of these stories and could not go further. I can take a lot and have never left a book uncompleted but I was so put off by these stories, I stopped punishing myself. The performances were great but that about all I can say.

Of course I love the book but....

Initially, I found this version to be distracting and detracting from the book because of the background music and sound effects - ticking clocks, insects, tweeting birds, etc. I was able to get used to it somewhat so that I could enjoy the excellent writing because the reading performances were so vibrant and wonderful - most especially, Emma Thompson’s narration. So all in all, a good trade off in the end. However, if you are a Jane Austen purist and simply want to hear the book read, this is not the version for you.

Fabulous!

I selected this book when it was first offered but it took me a while to get to it. Do yourself a favor: Don’t delay. Listen to it now! I have always enjoyed Stephen Fry as an actor and as a narrator, he does not disappoint. I love history and the Victorian age is fascinating for many reasons. However, the perspective of this book takes one down quite a different road with an interesting behind-the-scenes look. I appreciated the scholarly approach with the insight and involvement of the various researchers and authors leading me to want to read some of the books referenced for even more details. Time well spent and much enjoyed!

Excellent series for mystery and history buffs

I love this series for it's mysteries, which are fresh and well-worked but also for it's historical details. It gives a fresh perspective to the period that is cultural and factual. I really commend Jaqueline Winspear on her depth of research. Plus, she ties it all together in a well-written package. I can't wait to read more and highly recommend this series. Lastly, Orlagh Cassidy does a wonderful job with the narration. It is good that this series has now settled in with her. She really brings the pacing and authenticity it was due.

Good stories but mispronunciations by narrator annoying

The stories were very good and enjoyable. Even the narration was good overall. However, mispronunciations of some common words by the narrator were jarring enough to be distracting, which was unfortunate. They should have been easily checked or the director or someone should have caught the errors and helped the narrator. It made one lack confidence that things like the place names were pronounced correctly. Still, the book was quite enjoyable and I can recommend it.
