If you like the series, you’ll likely like this one. It’s a good addition. It didn’t have any overly annoying sound effects (sometimes they struggle between funny and annoying- didn’t find that here).

This is the first book my kid and I disagreed on. They thought it was kinda funny. I thought it was horribly annoying and wished it never existed. So make of that what you will.

I tried the single narration and unfortunately tuned out right away. This full cast version is incredible. Kept my attention so that I could listen to this story, which is phenomenal. Also, love this as an asexual nonbinary love story 💜

Wow! That was the most incredible short story I’ve heard in a long time. I’m blown away. The development of bonds between the characters was so good (especially since it did such a great job without relying on romance!). The sci-fi and historical elements were both well developed too. The time travel was explained just enough that it feels pulled together and makes sense, but not overly explained so that you start poking holes. I’m definitely going to have to read some of this author’s work now!

Dirty laundry with bad music

I went into this expecting to hear a story about a queer couple having a baby, but this came off instead as airing dirty laundry. It felt like the author just really needed to share her grievances about her partner. Most of this was about arguments and hating each other and very little was about having a baby. They just seemed generally immature from this writing perspective.

Then there is just terrible music (apparently the couple’s band) between chapters for a few seconds every time. They aren’t even all on the same timing.

This is such a great story! It does an amazing job of showing the experience of nonspeaking autistics. I am so glad this book exists. I read this with my child right around the time that they had an experience that made them feel alien for their communication difficulties. It’s a great book for either feeling seen if you’re part of the community or teaching about this experience if you’re not.

Love the choice of spies

My kid and I have listened to every audiobook in this Scott McCormick series. Thankfully this did not have repetitive annoying sound effects like the previous ones, but kept them reined in better.
I loved the choice of spies whose stories were told. I had never heard of the Chevalier d’Eon before, but it was really special for my nonbinary kid to connect with, to see trans people throughout history. We had heard of the rest of the spies, but enjoyed their stories and learned new facts. I especially liked when other spies would chime in with humorous asides, like Mata Hari.

All ages allegory about climate change

Sweet all ages allegorical tale about climate change. It is not particularly subtle, but not overly heavy handed either. Just about right for the intended audience I think. There are really sweet messages about acceptance in the story too. The author’s note was a little odd, but the story itself was good.
I would suggest this for families looking for a book that everyone can listen to with kids or for kids to listen to alone. I think younger kids would especially like it or kids that are into faerie/hidden folk stories. I listened with my 10 year old kid who is a fan of faeries, and we enjoyed it.

Decent sequel

My son and I really liked the first Viva Durant story. This was a decent sequel. The story was okay, but it didn’t hold our attention that well (it took months to finish). I guessed the perpetrator in the beginning, but for the wrong motives. However, I think it did a great job of keeping you guessing who the perpetrator would be. I didn’t feel super concrete about my theory.
I did find it a bit of a stretch that people living in New Orleans (Gram her whole life and Viva in visits) would not know that Voodoo is a religion, not witchcraft. Even my 9 year old son all the way across the country knows that. So to live in a place that is probably the USA capital of voodoo and get that wrong feels off.
