love this author, but did not enjoy this narrator at all
Revisado: 06-21-24
I like Scarlett's novels very much. I would not have hung in there and listened to this narrator had that not been true.
From choppy reading, to interpreting things that characters are saying it doing in a much different way than I did, to mispronouncing words, which became so distracting that I had to go back and re-listen to a chapter.

Extraordinary things happen when we harness the power of both the brain and the heart. Growing up in the high desert of California, Jim Doty was poor, living with an alcoholic father and a mother chronically depressed and paralyzed by a stroke. Today he is the director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University, of which the Dalai Lama is a founding benefactor.

It has encouraged me and inspired me to get back on track and shift my thinking again. I'm so grateful.

Historia
In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis, Richard Rothstein explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation - that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, he incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation - the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments - that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

I feel like I made it to a new level of "woke" after reading this book. It is absolutely disgusting and shocking what we continued and continue to do to oppress people of color.
I love that the author offered solutions for how to right this HUGE and deliberate wrong. The solutions or "remedies" as he calls them, are big and sweeping and unfortunately I don't think I'll see that in my lifetime.
I am glad I have a much better understanding of the ways we used and abused or simply ignored laws to continually and purposefully enforce segregation and poverty among black people.

Tremendous Story-telling, terrific performances.
Revisado: 09-14-20
The way the writer tells the story is so interesting. Not the story itself, but the way it's told conjured up the feeling of "handwoven" in a sense. The sense of a "country craft fair", with homemade goods, and handmade products to buy and sell. I have great admiration for the performers. What a challenging piece! They were incredibly dynamic during monologues that were quite lengthy. The stamina to carry the performance, each by themselves, to keep up the energy; to show such a broad range of nuanced emotion with an audio-only medium, whew, how Incredible!

Historia
What is it like to be a dog? A bat? Or a dolphin? To find out, neuroscientist Gregory Berns and his team began with a radical step: they taught dogs to go into an MRI scanner - completely awake. They discovered what makes dogs individuals with varying capacities for self-control, different value systems, and a complex understanding of human speech. And dogs were just the beginning. In What It's Like to Be a Dog, Berns explores the fascinating inner lives of wild animals from dolphins and sea lions to the extinct Tasmanian tiger.

Quality Book For Nerding Out!
Revisado: 08-27-19
This book is fantastic. It does go into a lot of biology and scientific explanations that can get messy and confusing at times. The author does a good job of explaining most things in layman's terms, which was helpful.

I appreciate women's struggles much better now...
Revisado: 08-20-18
I enjoyed this book so much! I, one day, sat up with this super-strong desire to know about the history of the rights and opportunities of women in recent history.
Someone on my FB responded to my plea for personal stories about women's experiences and recommended this book to me. I love so many of the anecdotes. Women are strong , Intelligent and inspiring.
Also, I have so much more gratitude toward so very many things...choice , opportunities that I have. I may be too young to remember much of this "girl-fight", but this book thoroughly got me caught up and ready to jump in and continue the cause!

This was a very intense story. I especially enjoyed the way it was broken up and read by two different voices. Listening to this book could have proven to be very confusing without the duo of readers. A well-written story, and dynamic reading performance.
